The #15 Michigan women have just put together their first undefeated season since 2007-08 after dismantling their rival Spartans of Michigan State in East Lansing, 199 to 95.
The meet format was different from what most division I dual meets look like, as today’s Wolverine-Spartan battle included all five relays, 50’s of stroke, and the 100 IM. Michigan got right to it, taking back-to-back wins in the 400 medley relay (3:45.30) and 800 free relay (7:28.53). That 800 relay, made up of freshmen Gabby DeLoof, Hannah Moore, and Gillian Ryan as well as sophomore Claudia Goswell, broke the pool record.
Zoe Mattingly led a 1-2 finish in the 50 back (26.05) as Claudia Lau (26.77) grabbed 2nd for the Wolverines. Winning the 50 fly was Gabby DeLoof (25.23), but Michigan State struck in the 50 breast. Senior Shelby Lacy broke up the Blue and Maize domination with a quick 29.12 and was the only swimmer to break 30 seconds in the event.
Senior Ali DeLoof was on relay duties, as she led off every relay with the exception of the 800 free relay, and helped Michigan to victories on each relay she swam. Her 55.23 100 back lead off in the 400 medley relay tied the pool record.
Winning the 500 free in a solid time of 4:50.92 was Ryan, who has been a huge part of Michigan resurgence in the Big Ten. A part of an incredibly talented freshman class, Ryan, along with Moore, has been huge in making a name for the Wolverine distance crew. Moore notched a win of her own in the 200 back, touching the wall at 2:03.14.
Marni Oldershaw was a double-winner for the Wolverines, taking both the 100 IM and the 200 breast. After trailing freshman Emily Kopas in the first half of the IM, she roared back, out-splitting Kopas by over 2.5 seconds on the 2nd 50 to win in 57.38 to Kopas’ 58.91. Oldershaw was victorious in the 200 breast with a final time of 2:19.34, the only swimmer to break 2:21.00 in the field.
Michigan State’s only other win came in the 200 fly, where Elizabeth Brown (2:02.79) and Hannah Pugh (2:03.91) went 1-2 for the Spartans. Wolverine diver Carey Chen won both diving events, while freshman standout Clara Smiddy was, for reasons unknown, not swimming in this meet.

This meet was the final dual meet for either team as they gear up for the Big Ten Championships. Tomorrow at noon ET, the McCaffree Pool will see action on the men’s side, as Michigan comes to East Lansing to take on Michigan State.
