Middle Distance Freestyler Grace Tierney Verbally Commits to Wisconsin

Grace Tierney from NASA Wildcat Aquatics in Chicago has verbally committed to the Wisconsin Badgers, giving them a badly-needed piece of depth for their freestyle group from 50 through 500.

Her best times in yards:

  • 50 free – 24.32
  • 100 free – 51.30
  • 200 free – 1:49.91
  • 500 free – 4:50.67

She’s even better in long course, which includes hitting the USA Swimming Summer Juniors time standard in the 400 meter freestyle with a 4:21.60.

Tierney went lifetime bests in each of the four above yards-course events in a single meet as a junior: the NCSA Junior National Championships. Her highest finish was 16th-place in the 500 free.

In total, she dropped four seconds in the 200 free and 17 seconds in the 500 free as a junior, along with a second-and-a-half in the 100.

Her best times on relay starts, even accounting for the difference in reaction time, are impressive as compared to her flat-starts. In the 50 free, she’s been 23.45 and in the 100 free she’s been 50.75.

Swimming for Loyola Academy, she took 2nd in the 500 free and 3rd in the 200 free at the most recent Illinois High School State Championship meet.
