Middle Distance Freestyler Shelby Gertson Commits To Lewis University

The Lewis University women have picked up a new verbal commtiment, as Shelby Gertson has just announced her intention to join the team next fall. Gertson is a senior at Seton Catholic High School and currently trains with the Rio Salado Swim Club. Her primary events are the middle distance freestyles, but she’s also got potential in the IM and fly races.

Last season, Gertson was a championship finalist in both of her individual races at the 2015 Arizona Division 2 High School State Championships. Her highest finish came in the 500 free, where she swam to a 7th place finish. She also picked up an 8th place finish in the 200 free.

Gertson’s Top Times:

  • 200 free- 2:00.65
  • 500 free- 5:18.88
  • 1000 free- 11:00.30
  • 1650 free- 18:24.52
  • 200 fly- 2:14.63
  • 400 IM- 4:47.43

When she arrives at Lewis University, Gertson will be representing the team at the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Championships. She has the potential to have an immediate scoring impact for the team at the onference meet, as she’s already fast enough to score in the B-final of the 200 fly.

At Lewis, Gertson will train alongside Shannon Sullivan, a 200 free championship finalist and 500 free B-finalist at 2016 GLVCs. She’ll also be training with Caitlin Krull, the 15th place finisher in the 500 free at last season’s conference meet.
