Three meets down, and two National Records individually for Mie Nielsen, as this weekend at the West Denmark Championships in Aarhus the 17-year old has broken the National Record in the 200 short course meters freestyle with a 1:55.04.
That downs the 1:55.64 that Lotte Friis swam in 2009, and gives Nielsen her 5th individual National Record, and first as a freestyler.
Nielsen only returned to competition about a month ago after missing the World Championships this summer following a knee injury.
Her previous best time was a 1:56.36 from December’s Short Course World Championships; that swim showed that she was already trending in the right direction in this race, but the swim for the record on Saturday was still a huge sure forward.
On an encouraging note, two weeks out from the Danish short course championships proper, which is the only qualifying meet for Herning, many Danish swimmers are already close to the magic 780 FINA point standard they need to qualify. We want to have our biggest international team ever at our first ever home championships 🙂

It is rare to find a top backstroker who is not a very good freestyler.
Denmark’s 4×100 medley relay of Nielsen, Pedersen, Ottesen, and Blume can do some major damage.
Mie Ø. is really only known internationally as a backstroker, but she is a pretty decent freestyler too. She’s also been 24.58 in 50m free LCM, and 55.10 for the 100m LCM. With her, Jeanette Ottesen and Pernille Blume, Denmark have 3 legs of a decent freestyle relay.
And not to be pedantic, but this was in the West Denmark Short Course Championships in Aarhus. I was watching the East championships in Farum so I missed the record 🙁
Are you sure for the 24.58 in LCM? It looks a little bit too fast. Is it not rather 25.58 in LCM or 24.58 in SCM?
Anyway, you’re right. She’s a versatile swimmer. In London she has swum 54.04 on the anchor leg of the medley relay. I know she has also swum very decent times in the 200 IM. Really a star in the making.
Oops, a typo crept in there, you’re right it should be 25.48. She’s been 24.55 in SCM.
She has a PB of 2:19.94 for the 200 IM LCM, and 02:11.33 for SCM.
Mie is going to be a big star in Herning. After having to miss BCN, she will be fresh and hungry for some good results.

And yes her 2.11 in the 200 IM were in short course. 2.19 were in long course. It’s not so good.
But 1.59 in the 200 free last year in long course.
Should be able next year to swim 54 low and 1.57 in long course.

I don’t see how she can’t lose the 100 back at the next short course European championships in Denmark.
