While the PIAA 2A Championships were delayed due to coronavirus precautions, the 3A Championships continued on Thursday morning. However, the meet was truncated, and finals of the day 2 events did not take place.
After setting a National High School Record in the 50 free, State College’s Matthew Brownstead clipped his lifetime best in prelims of the 100 free. Brownstead raced to a 43.29 to lead the way. Matthew Jensen of Upper Dublin, the 100 fly champion, was also under 44. He was just off his best in 43.70.
In the 500 free, Liam Smith of LaSalle led the heats in 4:26.14 over 200 IM Champion Rick Mihm of North Allegheny (4:30.15). Defending champion Josh Matheny of Upper St. Clair turned in a 54.34 in the 100 breast. Last season, Matheny undercut the National High School Record in this event with a 52.52.
North Penn’s Caroline Dunigan came within hundredths of her best with a 50.73 in the 100 free. Governor Mifflin’s Emma Steckiel, the 50 free champion, was just a few tenths back in 51.11. Meghan Dimartile, a member of Upper Dublin’s record-breaking 200 medley relay, was within 3 tenths of a best with a 54.07 in the 100 back.
ADDITIONAL DAY 2 PRELIMS LEADERS
- Girls 500 free: Elle Braun, Upper Dublin, 4:55.61
- Boys 100 back: Sean Faikish, North Penn, 48.46
- Girls 100 breast: Laura Goettler, Butler, 1:02.66
- Girls 400 free relay: North Allegheny, 3:26.54
- Boys 400 free relay: Upper Dublin, 3:02.93
Mihm gets 2nd in the 500 Free, because that’s how finals would have played out…riiiiiggght…because he had no chance of winning. Blazer has the fastest entry time in the 100 Back and split at the 50 on prelims, but shut it down for finals. Big mistake!! How dare you assume you’d have a finals swim! Brownstead sets national record in the 50 and doesn’t get a chance at the 100 Free. Without a finals swim, no one sees the disgusting 18.6 he threw down anchoring SC’s Med relay. Let’s let the best HS sprinter this country has every seen sit out his final 100 swim. It’s a good thing the PIAA decided to do what the CSCAA’s meet did and… Read more »
Lighten up Francis
No one under 40 gets that reference dad lol
You’re completely wrong but they did the best they could. It’s only high school swimming. Those kids won’t even remember this in 4-5 years. Who cares about a high school gold medal anyways?
difficult times lead to difficult decisions leading to, hopefully, better outcomes in the final analysis. Feel sorry for the athletes, particularly the seniors, who missed their final chance to compete in high school. Don’t fault the PIAA for doing what millions of other organizations around the world are doing to ward off an epidemic. Considering this, who gives a s!&@ about the possibility that someone may have won, or more records could have been challenged? That’s very small thinking.
I can understand the handling of AAA girls on Thursday, but PIAA really fumbled AAA boys on Thursday
