Kristóf Milák set his second Hungarian record of the 2021 Hungarian Spring Nationals on Saturday morning in Budapest as he powered his way to a 50.47 100 butterfly swim.
The 21-year old Milák lowered his own national record in the event from a 50.62 which he set at World Championships in 2017. Milák is now the 7th fastest performer of all time, moving up from the #8 spot by passing Chad le Clos‘s 50.56 and within 1 second of Caeleb Dressel‘s 49.50 world record.
This is Milak’s fourth time ever crack the 51-second mark, having broken it twice at World in 2017 with a 50.62 and 50.77 and again at 2019 Worlds with a 50.96. With the 50.47, Milák is now within half a second of being the fourth person to crack 50 seconds in the event to join current world record holder Caeleb Dressel (49.50), Michael Phelps (49.82), and Milorad Cavic (49.95).
Milák is the fastest performer so far this season and the only swimmer under 51 thus far:

Milák will be looking this summer to overtake current favorite for 100 butterfly gold in Tokyo Caeleb Dressel who actually raced this event for the first time this season last night, hitting a 51.69 at the ISCA Senior International Cup. In a post-race interview, Milák shared that he’s three months into heavy training and is looking forward to swimming even faster at the European Championships which will be held in May;
“Actually, I’ve been training seriously since January, which means there’s still a lot to prepare for, it’s going to get better than that, I’m sure of that. I will jump into everything at the European Championships.”
Joining Milák on the podium, Hubert Kós and Szebasztián Szabó swam a 51.61 for silver and 51.71 for bronze, respectively. That gives Kós a spot in the top 10 worldwide this season, passing Egor Kuimov for the 9th place spot.
Milák also won gold this morning with a 1:46.15 to get under his previous PB of 1:46.68 from December 2020. That brings Milák to 5 gold medals over the course of the meet, having already won the 100 freestyle in national record fashion, the 200 butterfly, and the 400 freestyle.
The next time somebody admits to resting for a non-Olympic/World Champ meet will be the first. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t at least moderately rested. I take swimmer’s own statements about their level of rest/training through a meet where they exceed expectations with a gigantic grain of salt.
I rate Minakov as a slightly better shot due to his 100 speed. It is impossible to compare Milak’s current times to Dressel as he is swimming his version of the olympic trials something that Dressel is 11 weeks away from doing. Dressel just posted his best times in two of his weakest events the 200 fly and 400 IM which means he is improving his endurance. Of course we know about his speed which hasn’t gone anywhere, just look at his WRs in the 50 free and 100 fly in the ISL. Wow, Milak is simply on fire this meet.
Even if he doesn’t beat Dressel, he’s probably a solid lock for silver
Some of y’all don’t seem to remember the existence of one Andrei Minakov who beat Milak in the hundred in 2019 and is 2 years YOUNGER.
Yes, he is a lock despite Minakov swimming 50.8 when he was 17 (4 years younger than Milak is now) …
I am sure that there isn’t a realistic chance that Minakov will be 0.4 seconds faster this year (even though he is much faster than Milak in the 100 free and set a huge PB in that event recently).
So what is more likely
a) Milak wins the 100 fly
b) Milak loses the 200 fly
When you look at the times, Seto is closer to Milak in the 200 fly than Milak is to Dressel in the 100 fly. At this meet Milak had PBs in all the speed events, but in 200 fly and the 400 free he “underperfomed” (his times were still great, but in the 200 fly it wasn’t a PB and in the 400 free it wasn’t too impressive). If Dressel tries to defend his WR as hard as you’re trying to defend him against Milak he will have exhausted all his energy in the first 50.
If people’s predictions are as far from reality as you think, they don’t need answering, just wave at them as they float by.

Cool, but when you wrote that prediction i hadn’t read it and therefore it had no relevance for my comment (i never said that it was the most unrealistic prediction, but that it was the most unrealistic prediction I ever READ on this site). Not sure how your logically flawed comment got upvotes.
Dressel will do a 48.5.
So your trolling a bit. But I wonder if Dressel has his own “project 48” goal? He was a little faster coming home in his 2019 WC gold medal swim vs the semi. If you take the two best splits (22.83/26.57) he sits at 49.40. 48 seems like a long way away…seems like he would have to do it on the back half!
