Military Academies Cancel, Postpone Sporting Events with Partial Gov’t Shutdown

As the battle over the Affordable Care Act and approving a budget rages in Washington, the effects of the partial government shutdown that began at midnight between Monday September 30th and Tuesday October 1st is being felt both well within and outside of the beltway.

That includes the athletics programs at the nation’s service academies, which are within the range of activities that are furloughed during the shutdown.

The United States Naval Academy has already cancelled its soccer match for Tuesday night, and the  Navy – Air Force football game, which is scheduled to be televised this weekend, is in jeopardy, though no formal announcements have been made beyond the soccer game tonight.

All 5 of the service academies field swim teams, and specifically both Navy and Army are scheduled to begin competition this week. Nobody has said for certain, but it appears as though those meets will be in question if there is not an agreement of some sort, and a budget passed, in Congress.

The last time we saw a similar shutdown, which was in the 90’s during Bill Clinton’s administration, had one last 5 days, and one smaller shutdown that lasted three weeks.

Note that athletics programs at state-supported senior military colleges, including VMI, University of North Georgia, the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, and the Citadel would likely be unaffected. Nor would Norwich University, a privately-chartered Senior Military College.

If the holdout lasts through October, these are the meets that would be affected for each of the 5 federally-supported service academies (the MMA doesn’t begin its schedule until late November):

Army Black Knights

October 4th – hosting Boston University and Vermont women
October 11th – Alumni Meet
October 19th – hosting UMass

Air Force Falcons

October 12th – at Kansas (Women)

October 25th – hosting Notre Dame (Men)
October 25th – at New Mexico State (Women)

Coast Guard Bears

October 26th – at Union Relays

Merchant Marine Academy

None

Navy Midshipmen

Further to my idea of checking what Is funded the House is now working under Rules of Suspension which requires 2/3 majority.

A bill to fund Veterans Dept & The district of Cloumbia & Parks just failed because 165 Democrats voted against.

I was just reading Ww2 vets in wheelchairs are breaking down fences to get to visit a Washington memorial. a photo op for sure but effective.

I can’t wait for a Washington Olympics. 🙂

There has been no budget passed by the senate since April 2009. In 2010 the Democrats did not pass one because they would have to defend it in the 2010 midterms.

Since then the House has passed several as it is their Constituonal obligation. However the Senate has barely even tabled them for a vote. Btw The American jobs budget put forward by the President in 2011 was voted down 538-0. There is clearly a disconnect with reality in the Executive branch.

There has been a 4 year Continuing Resolutions that is passed to keep the government financed. This series has some conditions attached eg no subsidy for govt workers health insurance & a repeal of the medical devices… Read more »

The admission officers at the Naval Academy were also furloughed so that process is on hold, for what I hope is a very short time.

@DanM133,
Republic = form of government
Democracy = system of government

US is both. Former USSR is a Republic but not democratic.

Great job Tea Party! Completely irresponsible way to govern (well, actually, to NOT govern).

Obama, Harry Reid, and the democratic party were the ones who would not negotiate.

The US isn’t a democracy its a REPUBLIC. Besides the shutdown will really not affect anything important.
