Minneapolis Grand Prix: Dwyer Scratches 100 Breast; Top-Seeded Jaeger Drops 400 IM

USA Swimming has posted heat sheets for the first finals session of the 2014 Minneapolis Grand Prix, and one of the most noteworthy scratch is that of Conor Dwyer in the men’s 100 breaststroke.

While internationally not primarily thought of as a breaststroker, Dwyer was a very good one in yards in college at the University of Florida and managed to place 6th in prelims with a 53.94. He opted out of that final, however, to focus on his top-seeds in the 200 free (1:34.42) and what has become a top seed 400 IM (3:49.50).

That’s another big scratch – distance freestyler Connor Jaeger, newly-turned professional, was the top seed in prelims of the men’s 400 yard IM, but has dropped it in finals. Jaeger is better in the 400 IM than he gets credit for, but it was unlikely that he would beat a full-effort Dwyer and Tyler Clary in finals, so instead he’ll focus his attention on the 200 free where he’s the 7th seed (1:37.23).
