Minnesota Adds Owen Von Weihe for the Fall of 2024

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Multiple time Futures and NCHSAA State Championships finalist Owen Von Weihe has announced his college decision for next fall, committing to swim at the University of Minnesota. Von Weihe will graduate from Raleigh Charter High School next spring and trains under Paul Silver at the Marlins of Raleigh Swim Team.

“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming careers at the University of Minnesota. I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for their endless support throughout this process. I chose Minnesota for its excellent academics and program. I cannot wait to be apart of such an incredible community. Go Gophers!!! “

Von Weihe finished his long course season in July, racing at the Futures Championships in Ocala. His top finish at the meet came in the 200 breast, where he touched at 2:19.45 during finals. He was faster during prelims of the event, swimming a new lifetime best of 2:18.76. He also added new lifetime bests in the 200 IM (2:10.47), 400 IM (4:31.93), 100 fly (1:02.70), and 100 breast (1:05.04).

Back in February, Von Weihe finished his junior year of high school with a pair of medal winning performances at the 2023 NCHSAA 1A/2A Swimming and Diving State Championships. His top finish came in the 200 IM, where he took silver in 1:55.18. He also added a bronze in the 100 breast with a time of 58.65.

Top SCY Times

  • 100 breast – 57.35
  • 200 breast – 2:01.80
  • 200 IM – 1:55.18
  • 400 IM – 3:57.63

While Von Weihe has made solid improvements over the last year, he’ll have to continue his upward trend in order to reach the top of Minnesota’s IM and breaststroke groups. Last season, the Golden Gophers were led by 100 breast NCAA Champion Max McHugh in both events. McHugh has since graduated and entered into the coaching world, taking an assistant coach job at St. Thomas University.

Von Weihe will be joined as a freshman next fall by another breaststroke specialist, Luke Mychalowych. Mychalowych was the runner-up in the 100 breast at last year’s Michigan High School Swimming and Diving State Championships and boasts a lifetime best of 55.82 in the 100 breast.

The remainder of Minnesota’s class of 2028 is set to include Jaden Heinlein, Jacob Johnson, and Joe Polyak
