Minnesota Freshman Summer Schmit Breaks American Para-Record in S9 200 Yard Fly

2022 MINNESOTA INVITE

University of Minnesota freshman Summer Schmit broke her own American Record in the S9 200-yard butterfly on Saturday morning at the Minnesota Invite.

Schmit swam 2:16.63 in the heats. That shaved .19 seconds off her old record of 2:16.82 swum in March 2021 at the Aquajets March Invitational in this same pool. That time was done at the same meet where Regan Smith broke the American Record in the 100-yard backstroke.

Schmit is a native of nearby Stillwater, Minnesota, where she trained with the St. Croix Swim Club. She stayed close to home for her college swimming.

She represented the United States at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympics. While she didn’t win a medal there, last summer she took the World Championship bronze in the S9 400 free.

In the Paralympic classification for swimming, classes S1-S10 are for physical disabilities, S11-S13 are for visual disabilities, and S14 is for intellectual disabilities. Within those categories, a lower classification number implies a more severe impairment as it relates to the sport of swimming.

Schmit was born with a congenital disarticulation of her right wrist and has no right hand.

Schmit also swam 4:58.14 in the 400-yard IM and 5:33.79 in the 500-free this week. She has been as fast as 4:52 and 5:31 in those events, respectively.
