Minuth, Mahmoud Jump Into All-Time Top 10 In 500 Free Prelims

2017 MEN’S NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

South Carolina duo Fynn Minuth and Akaram Mahmoud became the 8th and 9th fastest performers in history in prelims of the 500 free at NCAAs.

The Gamecock teammates swam together in the first circle-seeded heats, pushing each other to the touch and hitting the top two times out of prelims. Minuth, a sophomore, was 4:09.55, cutting a second and a half off his seed time, which entered the meet seeded second. It’s been an explosive season for Minuth, who swam the 200 IM at SECs last year and didn’t make NCAAs.

Over the course of this season, Minuth has dropped his 500 free time from 4:26 all the way down to 4:09.5. He now sits #8 all-time in the event.

Mahmoud went 4:09.73 and jumps to #9 all-time.

Also in prelims, Michigan freshman Felix Auboeck moved to #11 all-time with a 4:09.93. The three will show down with the #3 and #5 swimmers all-time in Clark Smith (4:10.53 for fourth this morning) and Townley Haas (4:11.33 for fifth) tonight.

That does not even begin to describe how insane that prelims was. Coming into the meet. I could have given you 4 names that are now in the b final that you would have agreed could win.

Jay litherland dropped almost 3 seconds from last years prelim swim to end up as second alternate again.

PJ Ransford dropped a second from last year and goes from 11th to no longer coming back. Although look out milers. The fastest 18 year old miler in history is coming into his best event with one less 500 to tire him out.

The number 1 seed (Mitch D’Arigo) from last year is in the B final with a time just 1 second lower than… Read more »

First a 4 second drop in the relay last night and now top two seeds in the 500 (both breaking school record). USC is lightning it up! Go Cocks!

This is going to be a great final! Seems like after a bad split last night Clark Smith might not have the bad meet some were saying he was destined for. I do wonder how much him and Haas left in the pool this morning. Also South Carolina is on fire! Should be great!
