Mireia Belmonte on 400 Free Start List Despite Bronchitis Struggle

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Boglarka Kapas doesn’t seem to be swimming at this meet. The Hungarian distance ace was a no-show in the 800 free, and won’t be swimming the 400 free either, where she’s the #2 seed behind Katinka Hosszu. Despite one star being out of the 400, Mireia Belmonte‘s name does show up on the start list for the race.

Belmonte had a poor showing in the 400 IM final, failed to make the 200 fly final, and was a no-show for the 800 free. Later, it was revealed that she had been sick with bronchitis, which hindered her breathing capabilities and put a dent in her aerobic capacity. Her coach, Fred Vergnoux, said that they’d wait and see if she was healthy enough to race the 400 free– it looks like they decided that she’s a go for this morning’s 400 prelims. Former LCM world record holder in this event, Federica Pellegrini, will also swim prelims of this race after she won the 200 free and subsequently scratched the 200 backstroke.

Aliaksandra Herasimenia was a scratch in the women’s 50 back, where she was the #12 seed. Meanwhile, Zheng Wen Quah of Singapore and Kaio Almeida of Brazil dropped the men’s 50 fly. It doesn’t look like either swimmer is racing at this meet.
