Mireia Belmonte Reportedly Sick After Tough Start to SC Worlds

2016 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

After a tough start to the 2016 SC World Championships, it appears Spain’s Mireia Belmonte is ill. Belmonte was a four-time gold medalist two years ago at the Championships in Doha, but hasn’t had the same success so far in Windsor.

She finished 5th in the 400 IM yesterday, failing to defend one of her four titles from Doha. She then had a tough morning on day 2, failing to qualify for the 200 fly final before not showing up for her heat in the 800 free. She was the defending champ in both those events as well.

Apparently she has officially reported to the RFEN (Spain’s Swimming Federation) that she is sick. It will be interesting to see if she swims again here in Windsor, as she still has the 200 IM and 400 free on her schedule.

It is unclear whether the injury she suffered from in 2015 has anything to do with the current issue. She had bursitis, which affects the shoulders.
