Make it 3 for Miriam Sheehan: the Phoenix Swim Club 10-year-old broke her third National Age Group record of the weekend by taking down Olympian Lia Neal‘s 50 free mark.
The record took place at the Arizona Swimming Long Course Age Group State Championships, where Sheehan has been dominating her age group all weekend.
Sheehan had a huge drop in the 50 free, coming into the meet with a lifetime-best of 29.29 and leaving with a 28.52 that snuck under the old NAG record by hundredths.
That comes after two other NAG records earlier in the meet, but this one might be the most impressive, if only because of the name she wiped off the record books. Lia Neal was a 2012 U.S. Olympian, an NCAA star and American record-breaker for Stanford and will compete with Team USA at the World Championships in Kazan, Russia in just a few weeks.
Neal originally set the record at 28.59 all the way back in 2005.
Sheehan also broke the girls 10 & under 100 fly record earlier this meet with a 1:08.22, and followed that up with a 29.84 that broke her own NAG record in the 50 fly.
She now holds 10 & under NAGs in the 50s of fly, back and free, along with the 100 fly in long course and the short course 50 fly. Sheehan has also broken the 100 meter backstroke NAG, though that has yet to be reflected in USA Swimming’s records.
We have race video of Sheehan’s 50 free above, courtesy of Phoenix Swim Club coach Joey Morgan.
Other fast swim of that meet:
14-year-old Seth Chun swam 2.04.24 in the 200 fly. He had a PB of 2.11.55 last year!
I believe he’s a former NAG record holder in the 11/12 age category.
13/14 NAG record is very tough to beat. 1.59.02 by MP.
According to USA Swimming Top 10 Times, yet another record was broken this weekend, the men’s 11-12 200 Fly, and it wasn’t by Wynn Aung. Down in Florida Andrew Dare went a 211 200 meter fly. If true it betters the recently set record by Aung.
Dare Rose, and with his other times (27.1/59.8) it seems possible. Also funny that his 200 Fly in LCM is pretty close to his best yards swim (2:08).
PK – it turns out that he’s been 1:59 or so in yards, but was DQ’ed. I noticed that about his times too – not a very big spread.
Teamwiess, it has been reported on swimswam on July 12.

You can add the 100 back NAG record too.
She broke it in late June.

It’s amazing to see the long course records of that age category totally rewritten this year on the girls’ side.

The days when I used to compare my times to the boys are long gone. Now, alas, I think I’ll have to start tracking the 8 & unders to find kids I can keep up with.
Very impressive weekend of racing
