Phoenix Swim Club’s Miriam Sheehan took down yet another National Age Group (NAG) record in the 10&Under division this weekend, going 27.27 to break the 50 yard backstroke mark.
Sheehan’s time gets about half a second under the 27.79 previously set by Regan Smith back in 2013. Smith has gone on to break the 11-12 NAGs in both short course yards backstroke races, and has now among the youngest Olympic Trials qualifiers at age 13.
Sheehan has etched her name into the NAG record books multiple times already over the past year, albeit mostly in long course meters. She owns the long course NAGs in the 50 free, 50 and 100 back and 50 and 100 fly. This is only her second short course yards NAG, though. Sheehan previously broke the 50 fly record earlier this year.
Her new 50 back NAG happened at the Quad Series Dual Meet between Phoenix Aquatic Club and Mesa Aquatics Club at the King Aquatic Center in Mesa, Arizona. The meet runs Friday through Sunday, and the 10-year-old Sheehan has already won three events.
In addition to her record-breaking 50 back, Sheehan went 25.75 to win the 50 free and showed off her range with a 5:41.33 win in the 500 free.
That 50 free time is just eight tenths off the shared NAG of U.S. Olympian Lia Neal and current NAG record challenger Zoe Skirboll, and it might be the next major target record for Sheehan this short course season.
She’ll swim the 50 breast and 100 IM on Sunday.

Bobo – she ages up this month. While I wish her continued success in years to come, I must say she is HUGE in comparison to her peers – very clear from this video showing her 100FL NAG. Feel bad for those little 10-yr-old girls swimming next to her.

It’ll be interesting to see how she compares to Regan Smith in the next age group. Regan has above average size for her age, a lot of power and of course superior techniques.

Jared, you write the SCY 50 free might be the next major target record for her but when does she turn 11? It looks like she’s 10 for 2 or 3 years. 🙂
Little noticed was that Mikey Phelps broke 3 NAGS for the 30-35 division at Nats. Why doesn’t anyone write an article about this feat?
