Three coaches out means three coaches in for Missouri head coach Greg Rhodenbaugh. The first two were John Pontz from Maryland and U.S. Olympian Mark Gangloff; the latest is former Arizona Wildcat Julie Stupp, who swam for Rhodenbaugh while he was the top assistant in Tucson. Like Gangloff, Stupp has strong ties to the state as she is a native of St. Louis.
This will be Stupp’s first coaching gig, as she only recently wrapped-up her swimming career at the 2012 Olympic Trials.
She is best known as the only woman in history to qualify for the Division I NCAA Championship meets in both swimming & track and field. She spent three seasons from 2004 through 2007 with the Auburn Tigers, where she was a part of two National Championship teams. She then transferred for her 4th year of swimming at Arizona, where she broke school records in the 200 breaststroke and 400 IM.
NCAA rules allow for an athlete to take a 5th year of eligibility if they compete in a different sport, and Stupp took advantage by joining the Arizona track & field team. There, she qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 800m run.
Future breaststroke Mecca?
Gangloff is not a Missouri native. He was born in Buffalo, NY and went to high school in Ohio.
His wife is from Columbia, MO, and family still lives there.
