Missouri High School Record-holder Leo Kurucz Sends Verbal to ASU

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Leo Kurucz from Lee’s Summit, Missouri, has announced his verbal commitment to Arizona State University’s class of 2027. He told SwimSwam:

“I chose this school because the team’s chemistry was unbeatable and it truly felt like home. It’s everything I want in a school and swim program.”

A junior at Lee’s Summit West High School, Kurucz swims year-round with Tsunami Swim Team of K.C. and excels in a broad range of freestyle events, from the 50 to the 1000, with an occasional 200 fly or 200 back thrown in for good measure.

At the 2021 MSHSAA Class 2 Swimming and Diving State Championships, Kurucz was runner-up in the 100 free (45.77) and placed 4th in the 200 free (1:40.85) individually, and he contributed to the state-champion 200 medley (20.57 anchor) and 200 free (21.07 leadoff) relays. The latter set the overall Missouri state high school record. As a sophomore at the 2020 MSHSAA Class 2 state meet, he placed third in the 200 free and was a member of the winning 200 free relay. He has 8 Missouri all-state awards and 4 all-state honorable mention awards.

Kurucz swam on 5 relays at Winter Juniors-West in December. He led off the 200 free relay (21.42) and 400 free relay (46.42) and anchored the 200 medley relay (21.16), 800 free relay (1:40.62), and 400 medley relay (45.56). Kurucz is a Futures qualifier in the 50/100/200/500 free and 100/200 fly. His best SCY times include:

  • 50 free – 21.07
  • 100 free – 45.77
  • 200 free – 1:40.85
  • 500 free – 4:35.89
  • 1000 free – 9:40.06
  • 100 fly – 51.21
  • 200 fly – 1:54.00

He will join the Sun Devils in the fall of 2023 with Asher Havenhill, Ilya Kharun, and Will Woodall.

“Beyond humbled, and proud to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic journey at Arizona State University! Huge thank you to my family and friends, the coaching staff at asu and my coaches here, coach Tom and coach Faulkenberry, for getting me to this point. And with that being said, FORKS UP!🔱😈”
