The 2022 Mizzou Invite doesn’t have quite the same depth of field as previous years’ meets have had – the host Tigers welcome in swimming teams from BYU, San Jose State, and D2 power McKendree University this weekend, plus D2 Missouri S&T and a handful of other diving squads.
The result was a clean-sweep by the Tigers of the day’s swimming events: a positive sign for the Tigers, who are in a down year and were not near their bests in their last trip out against Indiana in late October.
BYU’s Mickey Strauss won the men’s 1-meter diving event, the only chip in the Missouri armor.

Diving Winners:
- Men’s 1 Meter Diving – Mickey Strauss, BYU (347.40)
- Women’s 3 Meter Diving – Sarah Rousseau, Missouri (343.65)
Among the day 1 winners was Jack Dahlgren, who swam 19.63 to top the field in the men’s 50 free. His best-ever 50 free came at this meet last year, where he posted a 19.48, but he was slower (19.56) at NCAAs. Dahlgren has been way-off his times this season (he was 21.08 in the 50 against Indiana three weeks ago), so a mid-season drop back to 19.63 is a positive sign that there’s not too much in that.
He led a group of five swimmers under 20 seconds in the event, including BYU’s Javier Nicolas, who placed 2nd in 19.79. That’s a best time by half-a-second for the defending MPSF Champion in the 100 fly and 100 free.
Among those five were two swimmers from McKendree: Gregg Lichinsky (19.90) and Caleb Law (19.93), who now have the two best times in D2 this season. The Bearcat men are riding the momentum of knocking off the #1 team in D2 last week, UIndy.
That contributed to a 2nd-place finish by the men’s 200 free relay in 1:19.17. They later placed 2nd in the 400 medley relay as well in 3:09.91.
Other Notable Results:
- Missouri’s Mikolaj Malec won the 500 free in 4:23.52, which is a best time by more than a second.
- Jane Smith won the 500 free for Missouri in 4:48.91, beating-out her teammate Macy Rink (4:49.25). That’s Rink’s first time under 4:50 in the event.
- BYU’s Megan Bergstrom swam a best time of 4:52.95 for 3rd place in that race. So too did McKendree’s Cica Cavalho in 5th place: her 4:53.82 is the fastest time in D2 so far this season.
- Missouri’s men won the 400 medley relay in 3:06.95, which would have ranked them behind only Texas and Virginia headed into invite season.
