Missouri’s Chadwick Blasts 43.48 100 Free Despite Loss To Tennessee

Video by Coleman Hodges.

Tennessee kicked off their busy travel weekend at Missouri for a quick dual meet against the Tigers tonight, beating the men’s team 176-124 and the women’s team 164-136. Following the dual meet, they hopped on a plane to head to Virginia for Friday’s dual meet against the Cavaliers.

Sam McHugh, Sean Lehane, Madeline Tegner, and Faith Johnson paved the way for the Volunteers, each winning multiple individual events. McHugh lead the men’s meet with individual victories the 200 freestyle (1:38.76), 200 butterfly (1:47.78), and the 200 IM (1:49.29), while Lehane swept the backstroke events in 47.84 and 1:43.41. Tegner and Johnson each claimed two individual freestyle events during the women’s meet. Tegner won the 500 freestyle (4:54.21) and 1000 freestyle (10:03.07) and Johnson won the 50 freestyle (22.81) and the 100 freestyle (50.39).

Michael Chadwick kept it interesting for the Tigers, however. The 20 year old ran away with the men’s 100 freestyle, posting the second fastest time in the NCAA this season of 43.48. The only other swimmer that has been faster than Chadwick this season is Florida’s Caeleb Dressel. Chadwick also won the 50 freestyle with a final time of 20.09.

There were a handful of great races this evening between the two teams. Missouri opened the meet with touch-out finishes in both the men’s and women’s 200 medley relay; the women won 1:40.66 to 1:40.80 and the men won 1:28.23 to 1:28.24. Beyond that, the women’s 100 backstroke was close. Both Tennessee and Missouri were aided by transfers in the backstroke events. Kira Toussaint transferred to Tennessee from Florida Gulf Coast and Nadine Laemmler transferred to Missouri after Western Kentucky disbanded. Both swimmers were fast, but it was Toussaint that got her hand on the wall first to win with a 54.34. Laemmler was second at 54.93, and although she didn’t win the 100, she later won the 200 backstroke by nearly three seconds with a 1:57.38.

The next great race was between Peter John Stevens of Tennessee and Fabien Schwingenschlogl of Missouri; another product of Western Kentucky. The pair raced through the men’s 100 breaststroke, finishing .07 apart. Stevens took home first place points with his time of 54.12, finishing just ahead of Schwingenschlogl’s 54.19.

Another men’s race that was heated was the men’s 100 butterfly. Mizzou’s Andrew Sansoucie touched out Tennessee’s Ryan Coetzee in the 100 butterfly; 48.89 to 48.96.

Mizzou could crush some sprint relays this year if Griffin can get his 50 back closer to his 100 and 200. If he can, Griffin/Schweigenschlogl/Sansoucie/Chadwick is a 200 medley relay that just might be able to challenge the Texases, Cals, Bamas and Auburns of the world.

Abby Duncan (Mizzou) crushed the 200 br with a 2:13 low in a practice suit. 1st our 2nd in the nation. Currently has the top time in the 100.

Worth noting that Lehane’s 200 back is a nation leader, I think.
