Missy Franklin In The Running To Receive ESPY Award Tonight

American swimmer Missy Franklin will be present at the 2015 ESPY Awards in Los Angeles tonight waiting to see if she’s the recipient of the award for best college female athlete of the year.

ESPN’s annual ESPY awards will start at 8 p.m ET tonight where Franklin, a former swimmer for Cal, is one of two swimmers in the running for an award.

Franklin will be up against four other top college athletes from a wide variety of sports.

Best College Female Athlete of the Year nominees include:

  • Missy Franklin – Cal Swimming
  • Taylor Cummings – Maryland Lacrosse
  • Lauren Haeger – Florida Softball
  • Micha Hancock – Penn State Volleyball
  • Breanna Stewart – UConn Basketball

Franklin concluded her collegiate career with Cal after just two years. At the 2015 NCAA Championships in Greensboro, NC. Franklin took home an unprecedented five NCAA titles combined from a mix of relay and individual swims.

A 14-time All-American, Franklin set a school record for the most victories ever won by a Cal swimmer at one edition of the NCAAs with her five victories.

Her most impressive victory came in the 200 yard freestyle. Going into the race, Franklin was the American record holder from her winning time at the 2014 edition of the NCAA Swimming Championships. Franklin took a huge chunk of time off her record, touching in at 1:39.10 to solidify her place in history as the fastest yards 200 freestyler and the first woman ever under 1:40 in the 200 yard free.

Franklin’s efforts helped the Cal Golden Bears take home enough points to win the overall team title.
