CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – As it has done every year for the past 10 season, the MIT men’s swimming and diving team officially opened the season at the Charlie Batterman Relay Meet, welcoming Bentley University and Wheaton College to the Zesiger Center Pool on Saturday afternoon. Tech was victorious in each of the nine events, sometimes taking first through third in an event.
The two events that MIT took first, second and third place in were the 200-yard medley relay and the 500-yard freestyle relay, the first two events of the meet. In the medley relay, sophomore Bo Mattix (La Canada, Calif.), seniors Michael Liao (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Remy Mock (Victoria, British Columbia), and junior Austin Fathman (Hamilton, Mich.) touched in first place with a time of 1:36.25 and were followed by the MIT B relay in second with its time of 1:37.58 and the C relay in third in 1:38.77.
In the 500 free relay, Fathman, sophomores Daryl Neubieser (Saratoga, Calif.) and Thomas Norris(Cincinnati, Ohio), and Mock were part of the A relay that came in first in 4:14.64. The B relay touched a few seconds later in 4:20.10 and the C relay rounded out the top three with its time of 4:20.66.
Mock had a busy day, taking part in five first-place finishing relays throughout the day. Besides the medley relay and the 500 free relay already mentioned, he was also part of the 200-yard butterfly relay, the 1500-yard freestyle relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. Fathman, too, had a successful day, being a part of four victorious relays: the 200 medley relay, the 500 free relay, the 400-yard freestyle relay and the 200 free relay.
MIT will return to action in exactly two weeks, swimming in its first dual meet of the season against Springfield College on the road on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1:00 p.m.
