Indianapolis, Ind. (May 28) – MIT men’s swimming and diving senior Justin Liu (Linwood, N.J.) has been awarded with the 2021 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Liu will graduate from MIT with a degree in biological engineering and has been heavily involved both on the swim team and in the greater MIT community throughout his four years in Cambridge.

Liu is the first student-athlete from MIT to earn an NCAA postgraduate scholarship since 2016 and first student-athlete from the men’s swimming and diving team to earn the recognition since Robert Schoenlein ’84.

During his time with the MIT swimming and diving team, Liu was a five-time All-American, four-time NEWMAC Champion and four-time NEWMAC Athlete of the Week. In addition, Liu earned NEWMAC Academic All-Conference accolades twice and CSCAA Scholar All-America honors two times in 2019 and 2020. Liu served as a captain for the 2020-21 year and earned the 2021 Malcolm G. Kispert Award, as MIT’s male scholar-athlete of the year.

The NCAA awards up to 126 postgraduate scholarships annually.  The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes who excel academically and athletically and who are at least in their final year of intercollegiate athletics competition.

“We are so incredibly proud of Justin for receiving the NCAA postgraduate scholarship! This honor is so well deserved, and we know it will be put to good use when he begins his career at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University next fall,” said MIT swimming and diving head coach Meg Sisson French. “As a team captain, a decorated swimmer and one of the best relay swimmers in program history, Justin has undoubtedly left our team better than he found it. We’ll miss his incredible work ethic, strong leadership skills and awesome 50 free relay splits. We wish Justin the best of luck and can’t wait to see all of the great things ahead in his future.”

The one-time non-renewable scholarships of $10,000 are awarded three times a year corresponding to each sport season (fall, winter and spring). Each sports season there are 21 scholarships available for men and 21 scholarships available for women for use in an accredited graduate program.

Liu will be using his NCAA postgraduate scholarship to attend the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University.
