WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ –  The Monmouth University men’s and women’s swimming teams opened their 2019-20 home schedules with decisive victories over Mount St. Mary’s on Friday afternoon at Steadman Natatorium.

The men won by a 161-93 margin, while the women’s team earned a 158-104 victory. The men moved to 3-1 on the season and the women leveled their record at 2-2.

Junior Trevor Askew (Johnstown, NY / Johnstown), freshman Dylan Edge (Chandler, AZ / Corona del Sol) and freshmen Tahlia Botha (Cape Town, South Africa / Reddam House Durbanville / Kenridge Primary) and Alexandra Ho (Perth, Australia / St Hilda’s ASG) each contributed three individual first-place finishes to propel the Hawks to victory.

NOTES & QUOTES

– Junior Trevor Askew led the Hawks with three first-place finishes in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 500 free. Askew now has seven first-place finishes this season and 13 for his career.
– Freshman Dylan Edge took first in the 1000 free, 200 fly and 200 back to secure the first three victories of his career.
– Rookie Thomas From increased his season wins total to four with his two victories in the 100 and 200 yard freestyle events.
– Classmate Blake Reynolds touched the wall first in the 50 free, his fifth individual win of the season.
– Rookie James Leitz won his second-career race by finishing first in the 100 back.
– Monmouth’s men won the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:32.87 as Edge, Austin D’Angelo, Dylan Barkhuizen and Leitz teamed up for the victory.
– For the women’s team, reigning MAAC Swimmer of the Week Tahlia Botha continued her torrid start to her career with three more individual wins in the 100 breast, 200 breast and 200 IM. Botha has won seven races so far this season.
– Rookie Alexandra Ho also won three individual races, giving her four wins on the year. She won the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle events.
– Sophomore Sarah Brennan won her first race of the year, the 1000 free, to give her five-career victories.
– Monmouth’s women’s 400-yard medley relay team of Muriel Maloney, Botha, Camryn McHugh and Ho clocked in at 4:05.01 to win the event.

NUMBERS CRUNCH
– Dylan Edge registered a new personal best time in the 200-yard butterfly (1:57.06).
Trevor Askew set a new personal record time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:54.06), nearly 15 seconds faster than his previous best.
– Thomas From’s time of 48.14 in the 100-yard freestyle and 1:46.54 in the 200-yard freestyle were both new personal records.
– James Leitz turned in a new personal record time in the 100-yard backstroke (53.52).
– Tahlia Botha set a new personal best with his first-place time of 1:09.07 in the 100-yard breaststroke.
– Alexandra Ho set a new personal record with her first-place finish of 1:57.80 in the 200-yard freestyle.
– Rookie Maggie McMillan’s second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke was a personal record (2:14.04).

UP NEXT
Monmouth travels to Iona next Friday afternoon for a MAAC dual meet with the Gaels. The competition is set to begin at 4 p.m.

Monmouth, N.J. (November 1, 2019) – The Mount St. Mary’s men’s swimming & diving team was downed by Monmouth 161-93 on Friday. The Mount women’s swimming & diving team suffered the same fate with a 158-104 loss to the Hawks at the Richard E. Steadman Natatorium.

HIGHLIGHTS: MEN’S MEET

  • Nicholas Starvaggi finished 2nd in 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:39.24
  • Peter Jones finished 2nd in 50 yard freestyle with a time of 22.06
  • Thomas deXavier finished 1st in 100 yard butterfly with a time of 54.15
  • Brock Cudahy finished 2nd in 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.35
  • Will Twizell finished 1st in 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:01.44
  • Alex Henager finished 2nd in 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.58
  • Gregory Afolabi-Brown, Brock Cudahy, Peter Jones, and Ryan Griffiths finished 1st in 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:19.09
  • Andrew Jones, Thomas deXavier, John Mata, and Martin Vasquez finished 2nd in 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:22.81

HIGHLIGHTS: WOMEN’S MEET

  • Jordon Friedman finished 2nd in 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:02.72
  • Kira Buchler finished 1st in 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.63
  • Juliet Whitman finished 1st in 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:18.41
  • Valeria Villagran finished 2nd in 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.22
  • Jordan Friedman finished 2nd in 100 yard freestyle with a time of 56.49
  • Kira Buchler finished 1st in 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:07.49
  • Magdalena deTar finished 1st in 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:27.87
  • Valeria Villagran finished 1st in 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:01.08
  • Juliet Whitman finished 2nd in 100 yard butterfly with a time of 1:02.32
  • Magdalena deTar finished 2nd in 200 yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.87
  • Jordan Friedman, Valeria Villagran, Kira Buchler, and Eliza Felos finished 1st in 400 yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:44.39
