While competing on day 1 of the FINA World Cup in Tokyo, the city hosting the 2020 Olympic Games, Russian Vlad Morozov tied his own World Record in the men’s 100m IM with a time of 50.26.
Morozov has been on a tear in this event this season, already clocking his previous 50.26 in Eindhoven. Prior to that, he held the WR at 50.30 from the World Cup Series in 2016. The event has helped the Russian lead the World Cup overall points/money totals by a comfortable margin heading into the 2nd stop of this final cluster.
Splits from his 50.26 performance in Eindhoven included 22.96/27.30, while tonight’s effort was comprised of 23.03/27.23.
Morozov earned the only sub-51 second time of the field after registering the only sub-52 second prelim in 51.77. Runner-up to the Russian this evening was Japan’s Hiromasa Fujimori in 51.58, just .27 off of the Japanese National Record, while usual American rival and reigning world champion in this event, Michael Andrew settled for bronze just .01 behind in 51.59.
Individual Medley events in short pool are a very weird competition. More than 50% of the distance is swum under water and only 15% goes to each stroke. Why not to make the pool even shorter, 20m for instance and we will see swimmers only when they grasp some air at walls. The only difference between strokes will be how swimmers perform turns: flip turn, two hands touch, one hand touch etc.
At least it is metres not yards
It’s like I’m arguing with my wife: I can never beat her logic. 😀
If there are so strict rules that regulate competition in each stroke to keep it a unique way of moving in the water then make a fifth stroke – underwater swimming and don’t mix it with any other strokes. IM competition in short pool (yards or meters, whatever) is very close to this idea.
Yozhik, not to be rude but have you ever got more upvotes than downvotes at any of your comments? I have never seen it tbh
The man speaks his mind and could care less what anyone thinks. Sometimes it comes across badly, but I admire him for his chutzpah. He is like Bobo but on steroids. Amazing.
I admire that he speaks his mind too and not everything in this comment from him is crazy, but I couldn’t disagree more with his thoughts about ISL. ISL is the future of swimming!
I wonder if he can do 49.99 at World’s? I know it is asking a lot on what is already an amazing swim but I would love to see that.
I saw Lochte go :47 IM in May 2017 at Masters Nats — in yards, and it was impressive. :49 in meters is hard for me to wrap my head around!
Will he get the WR bonus for the tie?
Rules say WR bonus only comes for BREAKING a World Record, not tying.
He will get extra bonus points for the tie. 10, I think.
Yes that’s correct. I thought we were just talking about money, since he’s got the title locked up.

(8.1.3)
Bonus or not, he’s already secured the overall title, that’s the largest amount of money💰
