Morozov Scares World Record on Day 1 of FINA World Cup – Hong Kong

FINA WORLD CUP HONG KONG

Several of the best swimmers from around the globe were in Hong Kong on Friday, as they gathered for the final stop of the 2016 FINA World Cup series. Russia’s Vlad Morozov and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu were among those in attendance, as they both look to cement their status as overall World Cup champions.

Morozov picked up 2 medals today, one of them being gold. His victory came in the men’s 100 IM, an event in which he’s the World Record holder. His winning time of 50.33 in that event was within hundredths of the 50.30 he posted at the Berlin stop of the World Cup. Morozov also took silver in the 50 breast behind Brazil’s Felipe Lima (26.32).

Hosszu followed her usual trend of multiple victories, bringing home 5 gold medals and a silver. She swept today’s backstroke events, clocking a 26.40 in the 50 back and a 2:02.28 in the 200 back. Her additional gold-winning times included a 1:53.98 in the 200 free, 2:05.39 in the 200 IM, and 8:21.09 in the 800 free.

Hosszu also picked up a silver medal in the 100 fly, where she finished behind Team USA’s Kelsi Worrell (55.68).

Chad Le Clos was a double event winner on the men’s side, sweeping the butterfly races on day 1. He first beat Japanese standout Daiya Seto in the 200 fly, clocking the only sub-1:50 of the field to win in 1:49.95. Le Clos followed that up with a win in the 50 fly at 22.31.

Additional Event Winners:

  • Men’s 100 free- Shinri Shioura (JPN), 47.17.
  • Women’s 100 breast- Alia Atkinson (JAM), 1:02.63
  • Men’s 100 back- Stanislav Donetc (RUS), 50.46

  • Women’s 50 free- Jeanette Ottesen (DEN), 23.95

Morozov – I would like to see where he is at in the individual fly and back events. 22 and 49 back seems plausible.

It is too bad we won’t see a Morozov -Manaudou showdown any time soon

He most certainly can do a 22 50 fly co sidering he was out 22.7 in the 100im wr i think… I think theres even a good chance he could do a 21 seeing as the backstroke would have been the slower part of that 50. He races 50 and 100 breast so it does seem strange to me why he hasnt done atleast 50 fly and 50 back
