Day three prelims of the Russian Olympic Trials featured some big names coming into action, including sprint star Vladimir Morozov in the men’s 100 freestyle and recent Olympic qualifier in the 100 fly Svetlana Chimrova taking on the 200 meter event.
Men’s 100 Freestyle – Prelims
- Russian Record: Andrey Grechin, 47.59 (2009)
- Russian Selection Time: 48.57
Vladimir Morozov took to the pool for his first individual event this morning in the men’s 100 freestyle, clocking a time of 49.01 for the top seed heading into the semi-finals. National record holder Andrey Grechin was close behind in 49.05, as was Alexander Popkov who was 49.08 for 3rd.
After a somewhat disappointing World Championships where he was disqualified for a false start in this event, Morozov will look to prove he is a gold medal threat in this event by putting up a competitive time come the final. The standard to qualify for Rio for the Russians is 48.57.

Women’s 200 Butterfly – Prelims

- Russian Selection Time: 2:08.00
Svetlana Chimrova of Moscow City led the women’s 200 fly prelims in 2:13.78, just ahead of Ulyana Vataeva (2:14.15) and Anastasia Guzhenkova (2:14.22). Despite earning an Olympic qualifying time earlier in the meet in the 100 fly, Chimrova was nearly six seconds off the Russian qualifying standard in this event. Her best time of 2:10.63 from March indicates she has a chance to get down into national record and maybe Olympic qualifying territory in the final.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke

Men’s breaststroke looked to be in good shape earlier in the meet in the 100 breast, where three men broke 1 minute and two earned Olympic berths. We’ll see if they can achieve the same feat in the 200 with the qualifying standard sitting at 2:10.50.
Ilya Khomenko was the top qualifier this morning in 2:11.84, followed by Kirill Prigoda (2:12.68) and Mikhail Dorinov (2:12.73). Russian record holder Vyacheslav Sinkevich is lurking in 4th in 2:12.94, while 2015 World Championship finalist Anton Chupkov qualified 7th in 2:13.80.

Non-Olympic Events
- Natalia Ivaneeva was the top qualifier in the women’s 50 breaststroke, clocking 31.23. The only other woman under 32 seconds this morning was Tatiana Chiska in 31.72.

I thought Vlad was not swimming at these trials? Was is someone else that was sitting out along with Efimova?
G3 – I never saw any reports that Vlad wasn’t swimming…I’m pretty sure we didn’t report any, at least. He has no positive tests that we’re aware of that would prevent him from competing.
Thanks. I know that there were no positive tests for him, so my comment including Efimova is misleading. I know Russia was sitting people out of competitions in various sports recently and I thought there was a swimmer who was included, but I must be wrong.

Nope, no problem, helpful link for context. I had caught that headline, didn’t click the link prior. Looks like the equivalent of a “late entry,” but when we caught him a couple of weeks back, he indicated he was definitely swimming, so I don’t think there’s too much to read into those trials lists.
