Emmitsburg, Md. (October 6th, 2023) – Mount St. Mary’s swimming and diving hosted American University today in their home-opener at the ARCC Swimming Pool. The Men’s team crushed the competition by a score 130-88, while the women fell to American 136-87. Between both teams the Mountaineers claimed 12 events with first place finishes.

Jessalyn Powell and Timmy Bonner were our divers today as they competed in the one-meter competition. Powell finished with a score of 124.50, while Bonner tallied a 164.40-point total.

Per the women’s side, the team shot out of a cannon with a first-place finish in the first swim event, the 200-meter medley relay. The team of Hanna AggenChristina LazariAbigail Steckiel, and Madison Murphy took first with a time of 2:00.12, setting a new school record. The previous record of 2:01.33 held by Maddie McGraw, Lauren Gullickson, Amanda Moore, and Juliette Lacoste was set on October 24th, 2015.

Maddy Samuels claimed first in the 50-meter free with a finals time of 27.07, while also having a 2nd place finish in the 100 free (1:01.20). Madison Murphy and Christina Lazari finished first in their individual events as Murphy won the 100 free (1:01.20), while Lazari claimed the 50 backstroke with a finals time of (33.47).

The men’s team had a day, collecting seven first place finishes. The men also started their day similar to the women in that they won their first event and set a school record the 200-meter medley relay. The team of Jason FitchAidan GradyGriffin Distler, and Lucas Hancock claimed first with a time of (1:44.06), trumping the previous record holders (John MataAidan Grady, Thomas De Xavier, Peter Jones in 2021) by two full seconds. The men also owned the 50-meter breaststroke as Grady finished first (28.45), Griffin Distler second (29.64), and Jacob Wallace third (29.71), earning their team a combined 18 points.

Nicholas Santorelli snagged two individual wins today in the 100 (53.32) and 200 (1:57.93) free, claiming a new school record in the 200, while missing the same mark in the 100 by .20 seconds.

Mount St. Mary’s swim and dive returns to the ARCC Swimming Pool next weekend as they are set to host Howard on October 14th, at 1:00 p.m.

EMMITSBURG, Md. – With wins in eight of 12 events, the American University women’s swimming & diving team earned a 136-87 win at Mount St. Mary’s on Friday afternoon. The men’s team got four wins but fell to the Mountaineers 130-88.

Notable

  • The women got two individual wins from freshman Kate Williams, who took first in both the 200 meter free (2:12.45) and 400 meter free (4:35.68 7), winning the latter by seven and a half seconds.
  • In the women’s 200 meter freestyle relay, the foursome of Mimi WattsIsabel McGovernDylan Moulton and Lian Jeong Engle got the win in 1:48.93.
  • Watts claimed an individual victory in a backstroke event, an unusual event for her, winning the 50 back in 28.90.
  • Also getting individual wins were Jeong Engle with a time of 59.81 in the 50 meter free, and McGovern who went 29.98 in the 50 fly.
  • Diver Peyton Thurman took first place in the lone diving event, the 1-meter, with a score of 221.70.
  • On the men’s side, diver Griffin Batt placed first with a score of 240.40 on the 1-meter.
  • Katie Yoo got a win for the women in the 100 meter IM with a time of 1:09.24.
  • The men got additional individual victories from Nick BuckleyCaleb Farris and Seamus Brown.
  • Buckley took the win in the 50 meter free in 23.75, Farris won the 100 IM in 1:00.15, and Brown took first in the 400 meter free in 4:15.26 which was nearly six seconds ahead of second.
