Mykhailo Romanchuk breaks Paltrinieri’s 1500 World Cup Record

Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine broke Gregorio Paltrinieri’s 1500-meter World Cup record earlier today at the Singapore stop of the 2016 series. Romanchuk’s time- 14:15.49- beat Paltrinieri’s old record of 14:27.65, set at the Eindhoven stop of the 2013 World Cup tour.

That also broke Serhiy Frolov’s 2012 Ukrainian National Record of 14:30.87.

Romanchuk, a 20 year old distance swimmer from Ukraine, owns two Ukrainian national records in the 1500 and 800- meter freestyles. Both swims took place at the 2016 European Championships. Romanchuk qualified for his first Olympic Games in 2016, swimming the 1500-meter freestyle in Rio.

Romanchuk’s swim dominated the rest of the field- his winning time was over twenty five seconds ahead of the runner up finisher. Romanchuk had only one split over 29 seconds- his 28th lap was a 29.00. See Romanchuk’s complete splits below.

27.02    28.50    28.64    28.92    28.84    28.77    28.66    28.68    28.57    28.52    28.26     28.50    28.52    28.52    28.45    28.46    28.31  28.38   28.35     28.48    28.60    28.42    28.72    28.83   28.60    28.74     28.71    29.00     28.73    27.79

Romanchuk demolished the old World Cup record, surpassing the old record by over twelve seconds. Coming in second place was Gergely Gyurta, the younger brother of Hungarian breaststroke star Dániel Gyurta, who swam the race in 14:40.56. Complete meet results can be found here.

Romanchuk also won the 400-meter freestyle in Singapore, in 3:40.64. The next stop on the World Cup tour will be on October 25th and 26th in Tokyo.

That is Serbian Velimir Stjepanovic on the podium; the picture has nothing to do with the story.

A monster swim, ominous evidence of a significant long course time drop to come.

Behind Paltrinieri (world record of 14.08.06 in 2015) and Hackett (14.10.10 in 2001)
14.15.49 Monster performance so early in the season.
Let’s see if he can go faster at next short course worlds in Canada.
