NAG Record-Holder Kevin Dang Chooses Columbia

Kevin Dang, the leadoff leg of King Aquatic Club’s 15-18 boys national age group record-holding 200 meter free relay, has made a verbal commitment to Columbia University for the class of 2020*.

“I choose Columbia because I felt at home from the moment I walked onto campus. Also, the combination of academics and athletics is one of the best in the country.”

Once primarily a distance swimmer, Dang has been steadily improving over the last year or so in the shorter distances. He went from 25 to 23.84 in the 50 meter free recently, and from 22 to 21.07 in the 50 yard free. “I am looking to continue this trend and drop more time this season,” Dang told SwimSwam. Dang’s top times are:

  SCY LCM
50 free 21.07 23.84
100 free 46.34 53.77
200 free 1:41.70 1:58.72
100 back 52.52 1:00.66
200 back 1:52.39 2:09.91
200 IM 1:55.12 2:12.79
400 IM 4:07.87 4:45.48

It took 20.5/45.0/1:39.9 to make finals in the 50/100/200 freestyles at 2015 Ivy League Championships. As Dang continues to improve his short game he will be instrumental in the Lions’ lineup – individually and on relays.

*DISCLAIMER: Dang has not yet been officially accepted to Columbia. As is true with all Ivy League schools, Columbia’s Admission Office will not send its acceptance letter until the beginning of December, along with those of all Early Action candidates. The procedure for a recruited athlete at Columbia is for Admissions to review (his) transcript and SAT scores, “support (his) application for admissions in the fall,” issue a Likely Letter, then offer (him) acceptance into the class of 2020.
