NAG Relay Record-holder Mitchell Schott Makes Verbal Commitment to Princeton

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Mitchell Schott from Newport Beach, California has announced his verbal commitment to the application process* at Princeton University for the 2022-23 school year and beyond.

“I chose Princeton for its high rigor of academics and athletics. Throughout my recruitment process, I talked with many coaches from great swim programs across the country. Princeton rose to the top of those conversations because it promised a high-level swim program and an incoming roster and a future of swimmers who mirror my lifelong goals in the pool. In addition, Princeton will offer the academic and educational resources that will allow me to pursue my course of study and continue leadership goals in multiple areas of my life. I am extremely excited to swim for Matt and Abby, and I am looking forward to what I will do as a Tiger!”

Schott is a rising senior at Culver Military Academy in Culver, Indiana, where he is the Regimental Commander (the highest-ranking cadet, responsible for the success and administration of the Corps of 500 cadets). He participated in the 2021 Indiana High School State Swimming and Diving Championships, placing 3rd in the 500 free (4:25.79) and 4th in the 200 free (1:38.02). He earned PBs in both events, with the 200 free best time coming in prelims.

Back in California, Schott does his club swimming with Irvine Novaquatics. In the summer of 2019, he was a member of three NAG record-breaking relays in the boys 13-14 age group: 4×100 free, 4×200 free, and 4×100 medley. The 400 medley record still stands today.

Schott specializes in middle distance freestyle, fly, and IM. He swam at the 2021 Speedo Summer Championships West earlier this month, finaling in the 200 free (17th), 400 free (21st), 100 fly (24th), 200 fly (18th), and 200 IM (16th). He took home lifetime bests in the 100 free (51.59) leading off the NOVA relay, and in the 200 fly (2:03.21). Earlier in the summer he had notched PBs in the 50m free (24.21), 200m free (1:51.70), 400m free (4:01.50), 100m fly (55.13), and 200m IM (2:06.20).

For the most part, Schott’s SCY times lag his LCM performances. He is a Summer Juniors qualifier in the 100/400 free, a Winter U.S. Open qualifier in the 200/500 free, 100/200 fly, and 200 IM, and a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 50/800 free. His best times include:

Event SCY LCM
100 free 51.59
200 free 1:37.72 1:51.70
500 free 4:25.79 4:01.50
1000 free 10:00.50 8:27.20
100 fly 55.13
200 fly 2:01.18 2:03.21
200 back 2:01.06 2:11.40
200 IM 2:06.20

Schott will join the Princeton class of 2026 with Conor McKenna, James Pan, Lucas Strobek, and Lucas Tudoras. The Ivy League did not hold a championship meet in 2021 but his best times would already have scored in the B final of the 200 free and been on the B/C bubble in the 500 free.

*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.

If you have a commitment to report, please send an email with a photo (landscape, or horizontal, looks best) and a quote to [email protected].
