Nash Wins Two at Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships

15 year old Oliver Nash, who trains at the Melbourne Vicentre, won both the boy’s 14-15 year old 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly on the first day of the 2016 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships in Canberra. Nash, who is representing the state of Victoria at the competition, won the 50 freestyle in a time of 22.86 and then went on to win the 50 butterfly in a time of 24.94.

13 year old Lydia Murray of Queensland just missed winning the same two events in the girl’s 13-14 year old age group on Friday evening. Murray won the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.86 and then finished second to fellow Queenslander Brooke Napper in the 50 butterfly. Napper, who won the bronze in the 50 freestyle, took the 50 butterfly in a time of 27.11 followed by Murray who hit the wall in a time of 27.34.

Queensland also went one two in a thrilling race for the gold in the girl’s 15-16 year old 50 butterfly. Isabel Lampre took the event in a time of 27.28 followed by Tanya Stovgaard who finished in a time of 27.29.

Queensland, who has won this competition each year since 2009, finished first in four other events. Jasper Dejager won the boys 16-17 50 freestyle in a time of 22.73, Lani Pallister took the girl’s 15-16 400 freestyle in a time of 4:14.65, Michaela Ryan hit the wall first in the girl’s 13-14 200 IM in a time of 2:16.72 and the girl’s 16 and under 4 x 200 freestyle relay won the event by over three seconds.

Victoria came away from the first evening with five wins in total. In addition to the two gold that Nash won on Friday evening Julia Hawkins won the girl’s 15-16 50 freestyle in a time of 25.15, Matthew Temple took the boy’s 16-17 50 butterfly in a time of 24.49 while Marco Soesanto took gold in the boy’s 14-15 200 IM.

New South Wales won three events which included Nick Jennens winning the boy’s 14-15 400 freestyle in a time of 3:57.05, Zachary Attard taking the boy’s 16-17 400 freestyle in a time of 3:49.70 and the boy’s 17 and under 4 x 200 freestyle relay winning the event in a time of 7:22.10.

The only other state to win an event was South Australia which had athletes win gold and silver in the girl’s 15-16 400 freestyle. Emily Liu won the event in a time of 4:09.72 finishing just one one-hundredth of a second ahead of Beth Mounfield who posted a time of 4:09.73.

That made me laugh!!!….my daughters surname (Mounfield) has been spelt in many different ways but never as Se-Bom Lee (Last paragraph)….but it was a great race!!
