Despite being on the original psych sheets released by Swimming Canada, American swim star Natalie Coughlin will not be competing at Canadian Trials in Toronto.
She’s the second high profile athlete who trains at Cal who was originally on the psych sheet but won’t be competing after Nathan Adrian withdrew earlier this week.
Other notable Cal athletes on the psych sheet include Ryan Murphy, Josh Prenot, Chuck Katis, Sean Mahoney, Tom Shields, Jacob Pebley, Marcin Tarcynski, and Seth Stubblefield. None of these athletes have given any indication that they will not be competing at the meet.
Coughlin was entered in the 50 free, 100 free, and 100 backstroke where she was seeded top three in each event, which included the top seed in the 100 backstroke.
If Coughlin would have attended the meet it would have been her second time competing at the pool. Coughlin took home a gold, two silvers, and a bronze at last summer’s Pan American Games held in Toronto. Most notably, Coughlin won her 60th international medal at this pool in the 4x100m medley relay that won gold.
Canadian Trials will take place from April 5-10 and will be the selection process for the Canadian Olympic Team.
With Coughlin no longer attending the meet, Elizabeth Beisel is the most high-profile female American athlete competing in Toronto.

She is too good to swim in Canada! Go Natalie!
That must not have been her I saw in Toronto this summer then eh?
That was when she did not have a choice. 🙂
Haha! No, I am just being snarky because of all the Canadians that got upset about international athletes coming to the meet. I actually love Canada. Montréal is one of my favorite cities in the world!
Is Natalie swimming at Mesa instead, like Nathan?
