The Nation’s Capital Invitational, formerly known as the Tom Dolan invitational will be held at the University of Maryland on Dec. 10-13. This meet is an age group and open short course yard meet where distinguished swimmers from all over America compete. Many of these swimmers have competed at the Tom Dolan Invitation in the past years and continue to strive to keep making the qualifying cuts for this meet.
Olympians Katie Ledecky and Andrew Gemmell will both compete at the meet next weekend. Ledecky will compete in the 200-yard free and 400-yard IM on day 2 of the meet, the 500-yard free on day 3 and the 100-yard free and 1000-yard free on the final day of competition. She will not compete in the 1650-yard free on the first day of the meet. Gemmell, on the other hand will participate in the first night of racing, swimming the 1650-yard free. He will also compete in the 500-yard free, the 400-yard IM and the 1000-yard free.
Reece Whitley, who was named 2015 Sports Illustrated Kid of the Year, will compete in the 200-yard IM, 100-yard breast, 100-yard fly, 400-yard IM, 200-yard breast, 100-yard back and the 100-yard free. The 13-14 age group record holder in the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststroke will join other U.S. National Age Group record holders at the meet.
These age group record holders include:
- Matthew Hirschberger (11-12: 1000-yard free, 13-14: 1000 yard free, 15-16: 1000-yard and 500 yard free)
- Cassidy Bayer (13-14: 200-yard fly)
- Allie Szekely (13-14: 200-yard breast)
- Meghan Lynch (10 and under: 50-yard and 100-yard breast)
This year’s psych sheet is loaded with fast entry times and a lot of great competitors to showcase some great racing at the newly names Nation’s Capital Invitational.
I might have missed this elsewhere, but why is Ms. ledecky competing here and not at the Duel in the Pool? Obviously, this is her home team meet.
That should be the only reason because why miss such a fun Team Usa meet like Duel in the pool ?
It will be interesting to see if Ledecky can snag the 1000 American record and unite all SCY/LCM distance swimming records for the women.
Anyone know why it’s not the “Tom Dolan” invitational anymore? It’s been that meet for years and Tom often showed up to cheer and hand out the hardware. The NCAP Invitational lacks any cachet (not least because they were the evil empire when I was growing up swimming the in the DC area!).
Rumor was that Dolan was no longer interested in sponsoring the meet. It’s gone through several iterations over the years. TDI, Joe Jacoby, JOs before that.
I’m not sure that it matters what the name is or if the new name lacks any cachet. It’s still incredibly fast and exciting!!!
Talking about 2 young talents I’ve watched for the first time at that meet a few years ago, Destin Lasco and Alex Walsh, I’m happy to see that they will swim at US short course junior nationals this week. I’ve not heard much of them since last summer.
Unfortunately the meet is now divided into 2 regions. Unfortunately for the fan. It’s always better to see the best swim against each other.
Hopefully the meet is still broadcasted.

We always see future stars there.
I’ve quickly read the psych sheets but this year, I will particularly keep an eye on:
– KL of course. Simple training meet or rested meet of the SCY season?
– Cassidy Bayer 52 low/1.54 on fly?
– Matthew Hirschberger. I was a little bit disappointed by his long course summer.
– Reece Whitley. 51 high/1.53 low on breaststroke?
– Allie Szekely. Wow she’s already 17! I remember I’ve watched her swim for the first time at that meet when she was 11. Very own style and much talent. 400 IM against Miss Ledecky! 😎

Look forward to watching Brett Feyerick swim some 11-12 top times, esp in BK events. So far he only has one top time in 50BK. Already some very fast swims in this age group: Dare Rose (500FR and FL events), Cai Crews (200FR and 100/200BK), Hayden Zheng (BR and IM events).
