NBAC Swimmer Alec Cosgarea Passes Away in Car Accident

North Baltimore Aquatic Club swimmer Alec Cosgarea, younger brother of Stanford sophomore Drew Cosgarea, passed away after losing control of his vehicle late Monday night and crashing into a tree, according to the Baltimore Sun. Alec was only 17 years old.

Cosgarea was headed home after a post-swim-meet team dinner, when his vehicle left the road, though circumstances of the accident are still fuzzy.

Alec was a Maryland State Champion and All-American in the 100 fly, and had a promising future in the sport.

NBAC head coach and CEO Bob Bowman wrote the following in a statement from the Olympic Team camp in Knoxville, Tennessee: “Alec began swimming for NBAC at age six and demonstrated determination and versatility in his career Alec is an example to our athletes in how he trained, how he competed and the standards that he held himself to, which will continue to inspire and motivate his teammates and coaches.”

Condolences go out to the Cosgarea family, the NBAC family, and all of those affected by this terrible tragedy.

A viewing will be held on Friday, July 13th from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Ruck Funeral Home in nearby Towson 1050 York Road.

A mass will be held at 10 AM on Saturday the 14th at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, 5200 N. Charles St. in Baltimore.

Dr Cosgarea and family,

Though we have not met, I learned of this tragedy yesterday through a colleague and felt compelled to reach out and express my condolences. Your efforts in orthopedics drawing you away from your family have taught me remotely and I thank you. I hope you approach these days with no regrets knowing that your calling to teach and treat as a physician inspired your family and others.

My family will pray daily for yours and offer that my son, Marco, who died 2 years ago July 29 at birth is there to greet your son in heaven. Knowing that experience, I can not fathom the depths of your loss as we hold our remaining 4… Read more »

What a sad story! Condolences to the family. The Stanford Athletic department is hard hit with many incidents recently, including the passing of Sam Wopat of Women’s Volleyball. Now the younger brother of a member of Men’s Swim team. In addition, the departure of Athletic Director, Track & Field Coach, Men’s and Women’s Coaches.

Hope they will rebound and wish for the best!

Nick. I would not mix euphemisms . Dying & departing are sometimes one & the same but mostly athletic coaches just leave /get fired.
