DAY 4 FINALS RECAP
Reported by Nick Pecoraro.
For the first time in program history, the Virginia Cavalier women are NCAA team champions, earning at least one A-finalist in every individual event. Taking team runner-up was the NC State Wolfpack, making the team rankings an ACC 1-2 finish. No ACC team, men’s or women’s, has ever finished higher than third place at NCAAs. Before this meet, Virginia’s best team finishes were a pair of 5th-place scores in 2015 and 2016. NC State’s best finish before 2021 was 7th place, achieved between 2017-2019.

I️ wonder how COVID impacted training and meets? Why isn’t there an article about that?

Congratulations to the 2021 Wolfpack women – what a strong performance. I am so proud.
It seems appropriate to call out the two women who formed the first Wolfpack women team.
During an early-season workout in the fall of 1972, we were surprised to have two females join the team. Jane Houchin (nee Halloway, if I remember correctly) and Patti Simpson started to workout in the deep end under the diving boards. Years before Atlantic Coast Conference formed a women’s division, they surfed the slosh and turbulence from the men’s team at the other end of the pool.

Great historical perspective. This is the foundation of the 2021 Wolfpack Women
swimmers but don’t forget Allison Grant in this group. I think Jane’s maiden name was Halliday and yes, she married Wolfpack swimming great Eddie Houchin.
Doctor, I so appreciate your corrections and additions. I can’t believe I forgot Allison Grant who also trained with us.
Congratulations Wolfpack Women! An historic weekend for the team! First ever medley relay title for any NC State team and 5 NCAA titles! Enjoy the success, but keep the momentum. Alums are proud of #WolfpackWomen!!!
Two combined programs in the top 3 on either side, when’s the last time that happened?
I’m gonna go with Arizona late 00s most likely….certainly Auburn in the 00s a bunch of times.
That makes sense… just got used to the Cal-Stanford-Texas hegemony 😅
