NCAA Champions Texas Pick Up Preston Varozza For 2016-2017 Season

Top-end recruiting is one of the many perks of winning a NCAA Championship title, and the Texas Longhorns have gained their first post-title commit from in-state local, Preston Varozza.

Currently swimming unattached, Varozza’s freestyle and backstroke events will bring depth to the Longhorns in the coming years as they continue to chase national titles. He is a decorated high school swimmer, winning the 200 medley relay, 100 free, and 100 back for Westwood High School at the Texas 6A Region IV Championships. Varozza raced again during the month of February at the Texas 6A State Championships and scored a second place finish in the 100 back (48.95) and a third place finish in the 100 free (44.94).

Event SCY LCM
50 free 21.37 24.9
100 free 44.94 53.66
50 back 22.89  N/A
100 back 48.95 59.36
200 back 1:48.95 2:11.61

Varozza’s personal best in the 100 back ranks him 7th on Texas’ top times from this season, just .01 behind Brett Ringgold. His 200 back is a welcomed addition to the roster because as it stands, his 1:48.95 would be 8th on the season bests list. The only backstroke representatives for the Longhorns at NCAAs were freshmen Ryan Harty and John Shebat, and sophomore Jonathan Roberts. Varozza’s times need a bit of work before they’re competitive at that level, but with an influx of young backstroke talent such as Varozza, Texas’ future title prospects are encouraging.
