Soren Holm, the 3rd-place finisher at last year’s NCAA Division II Championship meet in the 100 fly, will transfer to Notre Dame this fall, he told SwimSwam on Tuesday.
Holm is a native of Denmark who spent his first two years collegiately at D2 power Wayne State in Michigan, but will now head one state south to Indiana and jump to the Division I level. There, he will join a huge group of incoming swimmers at Notre Dame that will be one of the best recruiting classes for that men’s team in a decade or more.
His best event is the 100 fly, where he was a 46.69 for a 3rd-place trophy at last year’s NCAA Division II Championship meet. He also took 8th in the 200 fly, with a prelims swim of 1:47.87 (though he added more than three seconds in finals).
Holm’s potetntial might not yet be capped either; he’s split as fast as 45.75 in the 100 fly on a relay, and has split 44.51 in the 100 free, 20.5 in the 50 fly, and 19.61 in the 50 fly on relays as well.
The Notre Dame program is going to be almost unrecognizable with the number of new faces that will be counted on to contribute in a hurry next year, and Holm will now become their top butterflier coming into the season. He will have sophomore-to-be Justin Plaschka, at least, to battle with in practice. Plaschka led the team last year in the 100 fly at 46.98.
Holm has also been 53.13 in the 100 long course fly.
The 21-year old Holm (he turns 22 in November) has held a perfect 4.0 GPA for the fall 2013, Winter 2014, Fall 2014, and Winter 2015 semesters. This past season, he received the prestigious NCAA Elite 89 Award for having a higher cumulative GPA than any other competitor at the NCAA Division II Championship meet.
