The standards for earning an invite in an individual event to the NCAA Division II Championships have gotten extremely tough, as evidenced by Tuesday’s release of the “Unofficial” Psych Sheets for the 2015 Championship meet in Indy.
Only 14 swimmers were invited in most men’s events, while the cutoff line for women’s events came in around 17.
While the eventual entries fell at many more swimmers than that, those entries were primarily filled with either optional entries from swimmers already invited in other events and relay-only invites using optional entries to expand their schedules.
Unlike the Division III Psych Sheets released on Monday, these Division II sheets are “post cut,” meaning they’re a listing of those swimmers expected to race at nationals.
The Drury men and women lead the way with 14 and 16 invited swimmers, respectively, as they both look to defend NCAA titles.
Several other teams also peaked into double-digit invitees, despite the tight standards.
Men’s most invited:
1. Drury – 14
T-2. Queens – 11
T-2. Lindenwood – 11
4. Florida Southern – 10
T-5. Tamps – 9
T-5. Wingate – 9
Women’s most invited:
1. Drury – 16
2. UCSD – 13
T-3. Queens – 12
T-3. Wingate – 12
T-5. Cal Baptist – 8
T-5. Lindenwood – 8
T-5. Nova Southeastern – 8
T-5. Simon Fraser – 8
T-5. Wayne State – 8
including Queens (11 men, 12 women), Florida Southern (10 men), Lindenwood (11 men)

1. Again, you get in the meet you can swim all of your B cuts. So the 11 swimmers under the invite line in the 100 breast all were invited in other events.
2. 4 individual event max. 7 event total max. Last year Josa swam 3 individuals and 4 relays IIRC.
3. If a team has enough people to make relays, all of their relays with B cuts are entered. So, for example, Missouri S&T got their 800 free relay invited and another individual (Chavez, 200 breast). Since they have 5 guys, that means they can make relays to swim even if those relays don’t have the same people that got the B cut. For practical application, see West… Read more »
If a school’s 800 relay team is listed on the qualification list but is below the “invite” line, do all the members of that relay team get to go and swim even if not all of the swimmers were listed individually on the qualification list? None of the invited swimmers for the school are listed on the invite list as swimming the 800 although 2 of them were on the 800 relay team with the other 2 not listed individually on the invite list.
What are the event limits? Josa is in 5 individuals- can he swim them all? Is it the same event schedule as D1?
We could only wish. Each individual can only swim 4 individual events and no more than 7 total events. Is the way I understand it.
So for the 100 breast, they took 14, but there were like 25 swimmers listed there. Does that mean all 25 get to swim? Or just those 14?
All 25. The swimmers below the selected line are swimming that event because they have a B cut in that event AND were selected in the top swimmers of another event.
If you’re invited into the meet you get to swim anything you have at least a B cut in. So yes, you have the system correct.
Ahh, so that’s where the B-cut comes in. Thanks!
I don’t really understand the invite system, but I’m trying. I’m an examples guy, so I’ll try one and see if I get it.
Looking at the first event on the psych sheet (1000 Free), the last invited swimmer was from UCSD with a 9:19.13. If I read the article correctly, all swimmers on the psych sheet (more or less) are expected to swim.
So the last swimmer in the 1000 psych from Drury gets to swim the 1000? And also the 1650? Because he landed above the invite line in the 200 Free. Even though another 25 or so swimmers around the country are faster in the 1000 and 20 in the 1650?
Am I getting it correct?… Read more »
do alternates get taken to the meet??
Swimmer123 – not unless there’s scratches before the meet starts.
Does that include alternates for relays? Only the 4 invited swimmers?
And not to be a jerk, but wasn’t Alaska-Fairbanks on probation this season?

DrSwim_Phil – it seems as though UAF has appealed their ban, granting them a stay. We’ll track down an update and report as soon as we can.
DrSwim_Phil – confirmed with the AD, the appeal is still being heard:
