A quartet of swimmers from the Nation’s Capital Swim Club combined to break the 13-14 boys’ National Age Group Record in the 400 medley relay on Saturday.

The team of Michael MullenJordan EvansKris Lawson, and Simon Bermudez combined for a 3:26.76. That broke the old record of 3:28.14 that was set by a relay from the KING Aquatic Club in Washington State in 2016.

NCAP’s relay was faster than their record-setting predecessors on every leg but one, where they fell off the pace of Dang – one of the fastest 14 & under breaststrokers in U.S. history.

Comparative Splits:

KING December 2016 NCAP March 2020
BACK SPLIT 52.66 (Hayes) 51.32 (Mullen)
BREAST SPLIT 55.48 (Dang) 58.77 (Evans)
FLY SPLIT 52.74 (Nickels) 50.40 (Lawson)
FREE SPLIT 47.26 (Lu) 46.27 (Bermudez)
FINAL TIME 3:28.14 3:26.76

The NCAP relay included an anchor leg from Simon Bermudez, who is a new addition to the team after moving back to the U.S. in 2019. He comes from a strong sporting pedigree: his father Alejandro Bermudez was a 3-time Olympic swimmer for Colombia and his mother Carolina Santa Maria was a Colombian national water-skiing champion.

This was a great race by the young men. They swam as a team and you shouldn’t write about individual legs to make the athletes feel down about their teammates. Great swim!
