A quartet of swimmers from the Nation’s Capital Swim Club combined to break the 13-14 boys’ National Age Group Record in the 400 medley relay on Saturday.
The team of Michael Mullen, Jordan Evans, Kris Lawson, and Simon Bermudez combined for a 3:26.76. That broke the old record of 3:28.14 that was set by a relay from the KING Aquatic Club in Washington State in 2016.
NCAP’s relay was faster than their record-setting predecessors on every leg but one, where they fell off the pace of Dang – one of the fastest 14 & under breaststrokers in U.S. history.
Comparative Splits:
KING December 2016 | NCAP March 2020 | |
BACK SPLIT | 52.66 (Hayes) | 51.32 (Mullen) |
BREAST SPLIT | 55.48 (Dang) | 58.77 (Evans) |
FLY SPLIT | 52.74 (Nickels) | 50.40 (Lawson) |
FREE SPLIT | 47.26 (Lu) | 46.27 (Bermudez) |
FINAL TIME | 3:28.14 | 3:26.76 |
The NCAP relay included an anchor leg from Simon Bermudez, who is a new addition to the team after moving back to the U.S. in 2019. He comes from a strong sporting pedigree: his father Alejandro Bermudez was a 3-time Olympic swimmer for Colombia and his mother Carolina Santa Maria was a Colombian national water-skiing champion.
This was a great race by the young men. They swam as a team and you shouldn’t write about individual legs to make the athletes feel down about their teammates. Great swim!
Look for another story tomorrow!
Congratulations!
