William Roberts, son of U.S. Naval Academy head coach Bill Roberts, has signed his national letter of intent to join the Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA. Roberts is currently residing in Annapolis, Maryland, where he trains with the Naval Academy Aquatic Club. He’ll be graduating from Broadneck Senior High at the end of this school year.
Roberts is primarily a distance freestyler, but he’s also got strong potential in the 200 fly and 400 IM. Last season, he was a championship finalist at the 2016 NCSA Spring Junior Nationals. There, he swam to a 6th place finish in the 1000 yard free in a personal best 9:11.49. Roberts also placed in the top 16 of the 500 free and mile at that meet.
Roberts’ Top Times:
- 500 free- 4:29.06
- 1000 free- 9:11.49
- 1650 free- 15:28.90
- 200 IM- 1:55.39
- 400 IM- 3:58.21
- 200 fly- 1:50.27
At Michigan, Roberts will be training distance freestyle alongside PJ Ransford, an NCAA All-American and Big Ten champion in the 1650 freestyle. He should have an immediate scoring impact for the team, as his time in the mile is already fast enough to have scored at the 2016 Big Ten Championships.
