The NCSA Summer Junior Nationals meet kicked off tonight in Huntsville, AL. Through the first day of the meet, NOVA of Virginia leads the combined and men’s team scoring, while Suburban Seahawks leads the women’s team standings. Oakland Live Y’ers (OLY) is in 2nd in combined scoring, 2nd in women’s scoring, and 3rd in men’s scoring.
One of the biggest swims of the night came from Team Greenville 14-year-old Lilla Bognar, who won the women’s 200 backstroke in 2:10.62. The swim marked a truly massive personal best for Bognar, who entered the meet with a lifetime best of 2:18.66, which she swam in May of this year. Tonight, she took the race out in 1:04.56 on the first 100, and came home in 1:06.06, marking a consistently-split race.
With the swim, Bognar is now the #6 all-time performer in 13-14 girls LCM 200 back. Notably, Bognar’s swim comes a week after Irvine Novaquatics 14-year-old Teagan O’Dell swam a 2:09.57 at the Speedo Summer Championships to become the #2 13-14 performer all-time. Also in the women’s 200 back final was NOVA of Virginia 17-year-old Zoe Dixon, who came in 2nd with a 2:12.06. The swim was a personal best for Dixon, taking 1.32 seconds off her previous best, which was from January of this year. With the 2:12.06, Dixon is now the #40 performer all-time among 17-18 girls.
Impressively, Tsunami Swim Team of K.C. 17-year-old Alec Enyeart won the men’s 800 free tonight. This is impressive because Enyeart was just racing at the Speedo Summer Championships in Irvine on Saturday night, where he coincidentally swam the 800 free. So, Enyeart has made the trip from Irvine to Huntsville, and is racing again this week.
In Irvine, Enyeart came in 2nd in the men’s 800, touching in a new personal best of 8:04.39, which put him #47 all-time in the 17-18 rankings. Tonight, Enyeart won the race in 8:02.16, dropping another 2 seconds just 3 days later. He has now risen to #34 all-time in the age group. Tonight, Enyeart took his race out faster, and held his pace better.
Anna Auld, a Saint Andrew’s Aquatics 18-year-old, won the women’s 1500 free handily, speeding to a huge new personal best of 16:46.40. Prior to tonight, her personal best was 17:00.81. Auld posted a gigantic negative-split in the race, swimming an 8:27.36 on the first 750m, and coming home in 8:19.04. She was swimming with OLY’s Lucy Malys through the 750m (Malys flipped in 7:27.31), then immediately opened up a lead on her. Malys ultimately finished 2nd in 16:56.51.

It’s a sample size of one, but Enyeart’s splits from Irvine make me wonder if there was a current in that pool. His splits swimming away from the blocks were all about half a second slower than coming back.
He was in lane 7 in Irvine. I’d have to go back and watch the race but because he was in 7, he was probably breathing to his right on the odd 50s, and his left on the even 50s. That way he would have been breathing towards the rest of the swimmers throughout the race. You’ll see this a lot with distance freestylers. They’re faster breathing to one side versus the other. In most cases, they’re faster breathing to their left side because most people are right arm dominant, and breathing to the left puts the right arm in a stronger position for the pull.
There have been some great swims so far. Congrats to the swimmers and coaches at Germantown Academy. They are definitely on their way back and the coaches are doing it the right way unlike Richard Shoulberg, who used fear and intimidation tactics and promoted and encouraged physical, sexual and verbal abuse during his tenure at Germantown.
