Lincoln, Neb.- The Nebraska swim and dive team opened their 2018-19 season at the Devaney Natatorium on Friday against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits. The Huskers defeated the Jackrabbits 156-63.

The Huskers started off strong sweeping the top three spots in the 200-yard medley relay with Haebig, Beeler, Posthuma and Helferich coming in first (1:45.07). McCafferty, Worlton, Murray and Walstad followed (1:47.29) and Jeschke, Keith, Stalheim and Rhodes rounded out the top three (1:51.81) in an exhibition swim.

In the 1000-yard freestyle, Kaylyn Flatt took first (10:22.34), followed by Audrey Coffey for second (10:37.87) and Maggie Berning for third (10:43.68).

The Huskers took the top three in the 200-yard freestyle with McDonald (1:56.36), Acheson (1:57.06) and Kilpatrick (1:58.90) on the board for the Big Red, respectively.

In the 50-yard freestyle, Helferich (24.08), Murray (25.01) and Stalheim (25.09) rounded out the top three.

The Huskers took the top three in the 200-yard IM with Beeler (2:04.25), Keith (2:12.28) and Jeschke (2:14.03) in the lanes.

In the 100-yard butterfly, sophomore Izzie Murray took first (56.89).

In the 100-yard freestyle, Haebig found her second first place finish of the day (52.74) followed by McCafferty’s first place finish in the 100-yard backstroke (57.55).

In the 500-yard freestyle, Acheson secured a first-place finish for the Big Red (5:12.63) and Worlton followed suit with her first-place time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.97).

In the final swim event, the Big Red ended strong with Helferich, Haebig, Posthuma and Beeler in the lane for a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:36.77).

On the diving front, Knapton (328.72), Warak (309.75) and Troyer (294.82) secured the top three in the three meter dive and repeated in the one meter with Knapton (278.32), Troyer (274.13) and Warak (251.85), respectively.

The Big Red advances to a 14-0 all-time series lead over the Jackrabbits and will return to the Devaney Natatorium Friday, Oct. 5 for their annual Scarlet and Cream Intrasquad meet set for 4 p.m. The following day, the Big Red will remain home and host Northern Iowa at 11 a.m.

The South Dakota State women’s swimming and diving team dropped their season opener 156-63 to Nebraska at the Devaney Center Natatorium Friday night.

“It was a great start to our season,” said coach Humphrey. “We faced an excellent Nebraska team tonight. We made some great improvements throughout the meet and fought hard. A meet this early really showed us how to train to help us get better. I am very excited to see what this team can do this season, it will be special.”

Success in Freestyle

  • Richelle Bruyckere finished second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 55.45 and fourth in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 25.23.
  • Rori Conners finished in third in the 500 yard freestyle and fourth in the 1,000 yard freestyle with times of 5:31.12 and 11:14.06 respectively.
  • Maria Currie finished fourth in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:31.41 and fifth in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a 11:19.03 time.
  • Emily Pincus finished second in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.93, third in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 56.27 and fourth in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.39.
  • Alice Foote finished second in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a 1:40.93 time and fourth in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 56.45.
  • Daniela Santillan finished second in the 500 yard freestyle with a 5:25.35 time.
  • Ashley Theobald finished second in the 200 yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:40.93 and fifth in 200 yard IM with a 2:16.37.

Sophomores Shine

  • Kristen Davis finished second in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 58.73.
  • Tiffany Nguyen finished second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 1:02.71.

Breaststroke

  • Mikayla Beckman finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke 1:10.22.
  • Sam Frigard finished third in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:10.64

Diving

  • Quincee Simonson finished fourth in the 1-meter and 3-meter dive with scores of 207.45 and 205.43 respectively.

Up Next
The men will face Valparaiso and the women will face Valparaiso and Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa on October 13.
