Nebraska Bests South Dakota State in Season-Opener

The Huskers opened the weekend with a 154.5-88.5 victory over South Dakota State in Brookings. Freshman Berkeley Livingston opened her collegiate career with a win in the 1,000 free (10:31.54), while sophomores Maggie Berning (10:45.05) and Taylor Acheson (10:56.43) took second and third, respectively to complete the sweep.

Autumn Haebig reeled in her first victory of the season with the top finish in the 500 free (5:03.08), while freshman Molly Rosenthal pitched in a runner-up finish (5:10.11) in her first collegiate effort.

Sara Troyer opened the season with victories in the one meter (269.32) and three meter (302.10), which were both NCAA-qualifying scores. Grace Tiernon took second in the one meter (247.79) and third in the three meter (237.90). Roman took runner-up in the three meter (240.38) and third in the one meter (227.93).

In the sprint freestyle races, Allison Kopas was victorious in the 200 (1:57.36), while Rachel Powers took second (1:57.60) and Katelyn Kilpatrick finished third (1:58.00). In the 100 free, Carla Gonzalez-Garcia notched the victory (53.49), while Tori Beeler finished second (53.87) and Kopas third (53.93).

Lindsey Stalheim won the 100 back (58.68), while Izzie Murray finished second (1:00.66), while Beeler raced to victory in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.78).

In the 200 yard IM, Savannah Savitt finished second (2:12.50), while Kimberly Lanaghen added a runner-up finish in the 100 fly (58.76), while Maggie Berning took third (1:01.06).

In relay action, The Huskers started off on the right foot by capturing a victory in the 400-yard medley relay (3:54.99) with Haebig, Gwen Worlton, Beeler, and Savitt and reeled in a runner-up finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:41.33) with Kopas, Livingston, Sutton Marvin and Lanaghen putting the finishing touches on winning team performance.

Nebraska improved to 15-0 all-time against South Dakota State.

The South Dakota State women’s swimming and diving team dropped its opening meet 154.5-88.5 Friday evening.

The Jackrabbits won both the 50 free and 200 IM before the first diving break. A trio of freshmen led the way in the 50 free with Elisabeth Timmer winning in 24.76. She was followed by Katie Drezen who finished second (24.80) and Grace Witherspoon in fourth (25.26).

Ashley Theobald took first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:12.24 while teammates Tiffany Nguyen placed third (2:14.89) and Kristen Davis fourth (2:16.39).

Following the first break, the Jacks won their third swimming event in a row as Kristen Davis out-swam the pack in the 100 fly with a time of 58.23.

Other Top Times

  • Maria Currie placed fourth in the 1,000 free (11:00.38) to pace the Jacks in the event.
  • Emily Pincus was the top finisher for SDSU in the 200 free, placing fourth (1:58.09) and in the 500 free, placing third (5:18.28).
  • Nguyen finished third to lead the Jacks in the 100 back with a time of 1:00.72.
  • Freshman Alyssa Eckstein placed runner-up in the 100 breast in 1:08.56 with teammate Sam Frigard finishing third (1:09.00).

Relays

  • SDSU’s ‘A’ team (Timmer, Drezen, Witherspoon, Theobald) won the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.08.
  • In the 400 medley relay, the Jacks ‘A’ team finished second (Nguyen, Eckstein, Davis, Pincus) in 3:59.88.

Diving

  • Quincee Simonson led the Jacks in the 1-meter dive with a score of 217.73 to place fourth.
  • In the 3-meter dive, Abbi Rouse paced SDSU with a score of 229.73 to finish fourth.
  • Julia Gill placed sixth in the 3-meter (203.55).
  • Aleni Stoakes finished sixth in the 1-meter (189.68).
