The University of Nebraska has gotten a verbal commitment from City of Midland Swim Team’s Lindsay Helferich.
Helferich will head to Lincoln from Odessa, Texas, where she competes for the City of Midland Swim Team and attends Odessa High School.
She’ll primarily help Nebraska in the backstrokes, where her best times already would have put her close to C final appearances in both distances at the 2014 Big Ten Championships. Helferich is also a solid freestyler, and could eventually develop into a contender for legs on any of the three free relays.
Helferich’s Top Times
- 100 back: 57.08
- 200 back: 2:01.37
- 50 free: 24.28
- 100 free: 52.25
- 200 free: 1:52.17
The Huskers are starting to find their niche in the tough Big Ten Conference. Last season, they finished 9th out of 12 teams and nearly topping Iowa. But they’ve got their work cut out for them in trying to run down the next tier of schools, which includes teams like Wisconsin and Purdue. With points at a premium in a conference that only scores down to 16th place, swimmers like Helferich could be key to helping Nebraska take that next step if she and others can develop into point-scoring threats early in their careers.
