Nebraska Wesleyan University has hired Greg Fleming as the first head coach in the history of their men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs. Fleming will begin recruiting immediately as the Prairie Wolves begin competition in the 2014-2015 season.
Fleming will have the honor of coaching the only men’s varsity college program in the state that, buoyed by the hosting of three-straight Olympic Trials, has seen a slow incline in the level of talent and the only Division III program of either gender (and only 4th altogether).
Fleming has been hired after spending the last 29 years as the head coach of the local Lincoln East High School, where his dual meet record was 496-32, including two State Championships and nine runner-up finishes. He also coached 34 High School All-Americans at Lincoln East. He has put several swimmers on Division I programs, including former Auburn swimmer Heather Schwab, and current Ohio State Buckeye Ryan Bubb,
If there were someone who has a chance to take advantage of the new programs somewhat exclusive in-state recruiting status, it’s Fleming, with his experience and undoubted connections to the local swimming community.
The school has a quality 6-lane, 25-yard pool and now will offer 20 sports programs altogether. Athletes comprise roughly one-quarter of the school’s student body.
I also had the honor of swimming for coach Flem for four years at East High school. I can honestly say he had so much to do with my success and passion for the sport of swimming and ultimately swimming at the Division 1 level in college. I can’t wait to see what is in store for his team at Wesleyan. They are so lucky to have such an awesome coach!
I also had the honor to swim for coach Flemming and he is truly a GREAT coach. I have no doubt he will make history at Wesleyan!
