Rackley teenager Thomas Neill continued his impressive run at the 2019 Queensland Championships in Brisbane, wrapping up another gold in an individual event.
Tonight the 17-year-old multi-World Junior Championships medalist took his age group’s 200m IM title with ease, beating the rest of the field by almost an entire second, stopping the clock in a final time of 2:01.76. That represents a huge new personal best for Neill, as well as a Queensland All Comers Record for his age. The previous mark was held by Se-Bom Lee at 2:02.75 from this past June.
Entering this meet, Neill’s lifetime best in the LCM 200 IM event rested at the 2:03.53 he produced at the Aussie Age Championships earlier this year. He was 16 at the time and his outing gave him the Aussie Age title in the event.
Flash forward to here in Brisbane, and Neill casually logged a morning swim of 2:07.71 in the heats before he obliterated that with his 2:01.76 gold medal-worthy time. His result this evening was comprised of splits of 26.84/31.22/35.91/27.79 to get the win and log the 4th fastest time ever by an Aussie 17-year-old.
Another Queensland Age Record went down tonight, courtesy of Isaac Cooper in the men’s 100m back for 15-year-olds. The teen fired off a winning effort of 56.56 to slide .12 under the previous mark held by now-16-year-old Thomas Hauck. That old record sat at 56.78.
Cooper’s splits included 57.49/29.07, which makes the Toowoomba Grammar swimmer the 3rd fastest Aussie 15-year-old of all-time in the men’s 100m back event.
The aforementioned Hauck was in action this evening, taking on the 200m free. he produced a winning time of 1:49.49 to take the title for 16-year-olds. Tonight represents the first time the All Saints dynamo dipped under the 1:50 threshold in the event, crushing his previous PB of 1:51.09 from April’s Aussie Age Championships.
Hauck now inserts himself onto the list of all-time Aussie performers at 16 years of age at slot #6.
Additional winners on the evening included Chloe Gubecka reaping gold in the 17-year-old 1500m free in a time of 17:23.63, while Eve Thomas of New Zealand logged a time of 16:28.57 in the 18-year-old age category.
The open women’s 1500m free saw on-fire Kiah Melverton get it done for gold in a time fo 16:04.48, adding this event to her haul of 200m free gold, 400m free gold and 800m free gold for a clean sweep.
Jack McLoughlin also swept the men’s mid-distance free events as well taking the 800m free this evening in 7;52.67.
Thursday night – 16 year old Hauck broke a Larkin’s allcomers record in 200 IM. 2.02.71 . Now third on all time Australian list for 16 year olds.
