Nevada Butterfly/Sprint Free Specialist Marley Maluafiti Verbally Commits to San Jose State

Marley Maluafiti, from Sandpipers of Nevada, has made a verbal commitment to join the roster of the San Jose State Spartans in the 2015-16 season.

Maluafiti is a senior at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada, and has been an integral member of all three Nevada High School State team championship titles they have won since her freshman year. As state champion in the 100 fly, third-place finisher in the 50 free, and member of Bishop Gorman’s first-place 200 medley and 200 free relays, Maluafiti was one of the key elements in the school’s 2014 title. In her freshman and sophomore years, she placed in the top three in both the 50 and 100 frees and was a member of Bishop Gorman’s 4×50 and 4×100 free relays. Their 200 free relay lowered the state record by 3.2 seconds in 2012.

Maluafiti swims for Coach Ron Aitken at Sandpipers of Nevada. She is a national-level 100 and 200 butterflier whose top times over the last two seasons have been:

200y fly: 2:02.31 200m fly: 2:18.00
100y fly: 55.89 100m fly: 1:03.53
50y free: 24.00 50m free: 27.76
100y free: 51.77 100m free: 56.19
200y free: 1:52.77 200m free: 2:08.82
200y IM: 2:08.82 200m IM: 2:27.97

Maluafiti will join a Spartans roster that could use some help in the fly, as their top two scorers in the 2014 Mountain West Conference Championships were both seniors at the time. Maluafiti’s 100 and 200 fly times would already place her in the B-finals with another year left to improve. Her sprint free times would land her just outside scoring range, but that, too, could change in a year. Maluafiti should be a great addition to SJSU’s relays as well.
