New Mexico Releases 2015-16 Schedule

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The University of New Mexico swimming and diving team is pleased to release its schedule for the 2015-16 season. Head coach Kunio Kono and the Lobos will have three home meets at the Seidler Natatorium over the course of the year, as well as a tough dual meet against Washington State and last year’s Mountain West champions, San Diego State.

“We are very excited and looking forward to good challenges this season,” Kono said. “We will be competing for the first time against a Pac-12 team in Washington State as well as San Diego State, which won the conference title last year.”

The Lobos begin the year with a tough three-day, three-meet trip in Colorado from October 8-10, with competetions against Colorado State and Air Force before finishing with a relay meet at Denver University.

“Opening up with the three-day trip in Colorado is always hard for our athletes, but it builds great team structure in beginning of the season,” said Kono. “We did it last year and our athletes were physically and mentally tired at the end, but they built toughness with the trip.  Ending up with the DU relay meet is alway fun and the different environment gives our team another competitive boost.”

Following that stretch the Lobos will have two of their three home meets on back-to-back weekends. They will host Wyoming on Saturday, Oct. 24 and Northern Colorado the next weekend on Oct. 31.

The following weekend will be the tough trip to San Diego to take on both the Aztecs and the Cougars on Nov. 7 to finish up the fall portion of the schedule.

The winter slate opens with the U.S. Winter Nationals for swimmers from Dec. 2-5 in Federal Way, Wash. That will be the only competition for the team until a three-week stretch in late January and early February.

The Lobos will travel to Flagstaff, Ariz., to face Northern Arizona on Jan. 23, before returning home for their final home meet of the year when they take on Rio Grande Rival New Mexico State on Jan. 30 at the Seidler Natatorium.

The divers will take part in the Air Force Diving Invitational Feb. 5 and 6 in Colorado Springs to close out the regular season.

The postseason begins with the Mountain West Championship Feb. 17-20 in College Station, Texas. It continues with the NCAA Zone E Diving Championships in Flagstaff March 7-9, and concludes with the NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga., from March 17-19.

“Our schedule is a mixture of great challenges for us this season,” Kono said. “We’re looking forward to the competition.”
