The New Mexico State women’s swimming team closed out day one against Northern Arizona in the lead, 134-88, at the NM State Swim and Dive Complex, while the diving team concluded day one of the Northern Arizona Diving Invite in Flagstaff, Ariz.

“We swam really well in the two sessions today,” assistant coach Rachel Judge said. “In the morning, we started out slower with the mile, but NAU has three of the top mile swimmers in the conference. I think confidence wise, our girls having the chance to swim against them is good experience at this point in the season. We picked it up from there and had a really solid relay at the end of the first session. The girls came back with really good energy this afternoon. I think the swim of the day was Hanna McGowan where she won the 100-yard breaststroke with a 1:02.61, which is her best time by a second and a half and is going to be one of the top times in the conference. That really puts her in position to be in the top-three at the WAC, so that’s really exciting. Alix Knagg had some really solid backstroke swims today. Picabo Bender was really solid in the freestyle, winning both the 100 freestyle and 200 freestyle. We’re really looking forward to tomorrow’s session.”

“Overall, the girls were solid this today,” King said. “The competition was tough, but they hung in well with some PAC 12 divers. It was a long event and it’s difficult to stay focused when there is 39 minutes between each dive. However, they handled the metal side of the meet incredibly well. We are hoping to come back tomorrow and make it into the finals for the three-meter.”

Frida Kaellgren represented Arizona State with a score of 314.65 to finish in second-place and Phoebe Lamay gave UC Berkeley a third-place finish with a score of 294.60.
