New Paltz Swimming Edge Ramapo 134.5-127.5

WOMEN

Wins by junior Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) and freshman Megan Joseph (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley, respectively, helped the State University of New York at New Paltz women’s swimming team hold on for a 134.5-127.5 victory over Ramapo College on Monday afternoon at the Adele and Reuben Thomas Swimming Pool.

Heaton started the Hawks’ stretch run by touching out her counterpart from Ramapo in the 100 butterfly, making a charge in the final half of the race to finish with an event-winning time of 1:00.78. Joseph followed Heaton’s swim up with a come-from-behind victory of her own in the 200 individual medley, reeling in Ramapo’s sophomore Brenda Arthur in the final 50 of the race to chart a 2:16.03.

New Paltz rises to 4-0 with the win and next visits Mount Saint Mary College on Friday, Jan. 23, at 6 p.m. Ramapo drops to 4-2 with the loss and hosts Montclair State University next on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m.

A total team effort helped the Hawks knock off the host Roadrunners, as five different swimmers combined for six first-place finishes. In addition to Heaton and Joseph, senior Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) helped key New Paltz’s win, finishing first in both the 100 breaststroke (1:10.24) and the 200 breaststroke (2:35.73). Senior Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay-East Fishkill) touched first in the 1,000 freestyle (11:25.03), while junior Kim Kallansrude (Muttontown, N.Y./Jericho) charted the top time of 2:18.39 in the 200 butterfly.
